Thank you for collaborating with REL Northwest to put research into action! We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you and stakeholders across Oregon to use data and evidence to improve education practice and policy.

As the current Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) contract draws to a close, it’s a great time to review some resources and research we produced together during the five years of this contract cycle. We hope you can continue to use and share these materials to make data-driven decisions in 2022 and beyond.

Improving High School Graduation and Postsecondary Success

The Oregon Graduation and Postsecondary Success Alliance uses data and evidence to inform policy and practice, close opportunity gaps, and help ensure historically underserved students have the necessary resources, systems, and practices in place to achieve their educational and career goals. Through the alliance, REL Northwest has conducted research and provided training to help education leaders in the state better understand the impact of high-priority initiatives on student outcomes, including:

• What Were the Reach and Impact of the Oregon Promise Financial Aid Program in Its First Two Years?
• First-Year Effects of Early Indicator and Intervention Systems in Oregon
• Career and Technical Education in Oregon: Exploring Who Participates in High School and the Outcomes They Achieve; Associated training materials: Career and Technical Education Data in Oregon
• Supporting the Transition to College: Accelerated learning access, outcomes, and credit transfer in Oregon; Associated training materials: Increasing Equity in Access to Accelerated Learning in Oregon

Increasing Equity in School Discipline

Through the Equity in School Discipline Collaborative, state and local education leaders are using data and evidence to replace unnecessary suspensions and expulsions with school discipline practices that teach social and emotional learning skills, promote positive relationships, and maintain caring school climates for every student. Collaborative resources include:

• Changes in Exclusionary and Nonexclusionary Discipline in Grades K-5 Following State Policy Reform in Oregon
• Are State Policy Reforms in Oregon Associated with Fewer School Suspensions and Expulsions?
• Improving Racial Equity in School Discipline through Culturally Responsive SEL

• Strengthening Relationships with Students from Various Backgrounds

Supporting Native Student Success

The Northwest Tribal Educators Alliance is a collaboration between the Education Committee of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians and REL Northwest. The Alliance focuses on using culturally relevant data and evidence to promote academic and community success for American Indian and Alaska Native Students. The Alliance partnered on the development of research and resources, including:

• The First Migratory Learners: Identifying and Supporting American Indian and Alaska Native Migratory Students
• Strategies for Improving the Accuracy of Native Student Identification
• Native Youth Count: A Resource Guide for Families of American Indian and Alaska Native Students
