DONATE NOW TO SUPPORT OUR NEW PROJECTS IN THE WORKS!

Dear Friends,

My name is Curt Himmelberger. I'm honored to be the new artistic director of Beacon Theatre Productions, and I want to share some exciting updates.

BTP celebrated its tenth year as a non-profit theatre company and continued its mission of providing accessible theatre that educates, inspires, and challenges. Georgina Bard boldly led the company through the pandemic producing three virtual shows in 2021: Edmonia about Edmonia Lewis, History Theatre Time Travel Experience about Frederick Douglass and Jo Ann Robinson, and Truth and Hamer featuring Dr. Daisy Century as Sojourner Truth and Terri Lyons as Fannie Lou Hamer.

We also produced A Thousand Fibers, a play developed through our three-year Fairhill Theatre Project.  It was inspired by stories from the Fairhill Community and featured a community art exhibit.

What's on the horizon for Spring 2022?

BTP is going to embark on a journey to develop a theatre piece about the life of Hatshepsut, one of the most successful female pharaohs in ancient Egypt.

Since Hatshepsut was born approximately 3,528 years ago, we are excited to share our Winter Fund Drive goal of $3,528!

Your gift supports actors, designers, directors, and others for their hard work, along with funding our additional operating expenses.

WHO WAS HATSHEPSUT? After her reign ended in 1458BC, her successor literally erased her from history by chiseling her name and face off of any monument of her, which made her disappear from history for over 3000 years.

When proof of her reign was discovered, the first interpretation of the white, European male Egyptologists was that if she was erased, she must have been a power hungry, vile and illegitimate ruler and her successor, bless his heart, was just trying to get back to the status quo; instead of the evidence-based theory that she was was a wonderful and legitimate ruler.

The story of Hatshepsut, which deserves to be told in its own right, also is relevant and analogous to the current events of today.

We currently live in an age of misinformation where erasure of history runs rampant and remembrance to produce change is more vital than ever before. We believe Hatshepsut’s story can educate others on the past, challenge them to see where similar actions are taking place today, and inspire them to go out and make a difference.

Help us share Hatshepsut's story!
