Sermon Text:  Luke 3:7-18
John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.’

And the crowds asked him, ‘What then should we do?’ In reply he said to them, ‘Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.’ Even tax-collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, ‘Teacher, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.’ Soldiers also asked him, ‘And we, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.’

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’

So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

Invocation:  Sing aloud, daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Let us rejoice and exult with all our hearts. God has taken away the judgements against us. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in our midst; we shall fear no more. God is gathering us, bringing us home.  He will sing and praise the Lord. Come, let us worship God on this Advent journey.

A Message From Your Music Director
More beautiful music will be presented once again Sunday morning at ten o’clock.  Last Sunday we had over 100 in attendance.  Our musicians did a fabulous job, and I was very moved by the choir and bells performing Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence.  Bring a friend and keep our attendance over 100.

Our selections will be accompanied by flutist, John Samuel Roper, from the Charleston area.  Things have changed since last December as we are now able to have choir in worship.  Last December our instrumentalists performed in Berly Hall and stayed to record in the sanctuary after worship.

We are delighted to have Catherine Dorosh sing Sunday as she returns to their condo here before hitting the road again.  Three former BEACH Singers, Taylor Baxley, Ben Tester, and Dr. Jonathan Tester will participate with Chancel Choir. Not only are they outstanding musicians, they have accomplished much professionally and are role models in their communities.

Additional guests include Patrick Downes, piano and his wife, Linda, singing soprano in the choir.  They are retired musicians living in Conway.  Patrick’s last position was pianist at First United Methodist in Myrtle Beach.  We welcome all our guests!

                                                               Hope to see you Sunday!
                                                               Olivia

Grief Support Group
Almost everyone knows someone going through grief; it might be a friend, family member, neighbor or coworker.  GriefShare is an 11-week video seminar and support group designed to help you rebuild your life after losing a loved one.  Our group is led by caring people who have experienced grief and want to help you through the difficult weeks ahead.  Our first session will be held on WEDNESDAY, January 12, 2022; we will meet from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the WINGS classroom.  Barb Ottinger will be leading the group, with help from Karen Sinkway.  We welcome all to our first meeting.  If you would like to sign up, please call the church office at 843-237-2294.

AED/CPR Training
St. Paul’s Waccamaw UMC has purchased two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for emergency use in the event of a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest.  One is located in the Sanctuary Narthex and the other in Christian Learning Center located on the wall across from the restrooms.

We are planning a training event for volunteers in the near future.  Our plan is to train members of the congregation who attend both the Traditional and Casual services.  Our target is to train twelve volunteers so that we have enough to cover both services and other church events.  The church is paying the training fee for the instructor and equipment - no cost to volunteers.

Please contact the church office (843-237-2294) or Dave Streeter (703-786-0670) if you are willing to take the training and become one of "St. Paul’s AED Angels.”
