Memorial Day Set for Homeless Persons

The Howard County Coalition to End Homelessness is holding its annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day service Dec. 21, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia.  The interfaith service, being held on the first day of winter, will recognize the lives of 11 individuals and a service dog who died this past year.

Lynn Messick, a former Grassroots shelter resident who became a long time staff member, is one of those being recognized. Messick, though retire
d, remained close to many of Grassroots staff until the time of his death. Two being memorialized were without shelter at the time of their deaths. While others had housing, their lives had been shortened by the long term effects of homelessness, including untreated mental and physical illness, according to Tina Field, Grassroots Director of Homeless Services.

The memorial service is intended “to shine a light on the lifelong impact of homelessness” and “recognize the people who’ve been lost,” Field said. The in-person and virtual service will include participation by County Executive Calvin Ball and family members and caregivers of the deceased.

In The News
Happy Families Special thanks go out to manager Mark Underwood and the staff at Seasons 52 in The Mall in Columbia for two sold-out Breakfast with Santa benefits for Grassroots. Almost 300 children, parents and grandparents will have been served by local high school student volunteers and visited by Santa, the Mall’s Miss Julie and a balloon twisting elf during the Dec. 4 and 11 events.
Special Tree HorseSpirit Arts Gallery in Historic Savage Mill opened its holiday arts show with a ‘Friendsgiving Reception’ and unveiled its Art of Giving Tree, decorated with colorful cold-weather necessities to help its neighbors at the Grassroots Day Resource Center in Laurel. Donations will be collected (including food and financial contributions) and distributed throughout the holiday season.
Training Grassroots’ ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) instructors spent two days teaching life assisting suicide first aid to Grassroots and Humanim staff members, including two veterans who spent Veterans Day growing their caregiving skills.
We’re Thankful Howard County includes many organizations that reach out to help others. The PSI Omega Alumni Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., for example, provided Thanksgiving baskets and grocery gift cards along with a bin loaded with canned good for families in need. Elton Harrison, Jr., organized and delivered the supplies to Grassroots, helping bring Thanksgiving cheer to households we serve.
Gathering Food St. Paul Catholic Church in Ellicott City has long been a supporter of Grassroots. A 30-member group of volunteers from the church seeks to collect 20,000 food and toiletry items during their food drives at grocery stores each year. Led by John Gilbert, the group collects and distributes food to Grassroots and several local food pantries, as well as hands out food every Sunday in multiple places in Baltimore City. The group has been operating since 2016.  If you see members at your local grocery store, please thank them for their work.
Open for Business The Grassroots Day Resource Center is now fully operational for the first time since May 2020, when services were limited out of concern about COVID-19. The center is once again providing hot meals, and pantry, laundry and shower access, as well as medical attention and other services during its regular hours of Monday and Wednesday, from 2-6 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. If your group is interested in providing meals, contact melinda@grassrootscrisis.org.
Vote A holiday visit to Manor Hill Tavern has multiple benefits for Grassroots supporters. The Ellicott City restaurant has selected Grassroots as one of the local groups to feature in its Thoughtful Thursday project.  On Thursdays during December, tavern guests can “vote” for one of three charities to receive contributions from the company based on their balloting.
Tis the Time We are grateful to all the individuals and groups who make donations to Grassroots. Now is the time of year when many people make financial gifts to worthy organizations, and Grassroots is hoping you will consider a cash donation. Grassroots is in the process of planning its holiday activities for current shelter residents and those who have been receiving other services.  Gift cards are especially welcome.  For more information and to coordinate gift card deliveries contact Monteith Mitchell, Volunteer Coordinator, at mont@grassrootscrisis.org.
