We Are Beyond Dynamic As Humans!

“So the time has come for the fullness of our species to be seen.
Where differences within our minds and processing have finally reached the eyes and interest of the mainstream.
Now that the world is watching and curious how will this change things for us?
Will we all now be able to reach our full potential without ridicule or fear?
Contribute our unique collective gifts to sustain ourselves, others and humanity’s need to strive towards a new era!
Or do more forms of exploitation, pain and barriers still await?
So people like you who have chosen to give your time to read these words are now part of how our story begins, evolves and ends.
So what myths about Neurodiversity can be laid to rest you get to decide and the fullness of all our being can truly begin to unravel and come alive!
So choose wisely how you take this information and to what purpose you unfold it into the world around you. You can single-handedly change how difference is viewed or you can take these words to create more nightmares with literally it’s that simple you choose!”
Extracts Taken From Neurodiversity: Beyond A Buzzword
Workshop, Reflective Final Thoughts Spoken Word Poem Poem

This is an exciting but also apprehensive time in human history for people that are neurodiverse. Who naturally think and process information very differently from what is considered to be ‘mainstream-ways-of-thinking’.

My name is Reannon; I am the Founder of Hidden Capacities. I am neurodivergent, I have a diagnosis of Dyslexia, experience Meres Irlen Syndrome and although undiagnosed I also screen very high for ADHD.

So what are some of these changes that we are currently seeing within society?
  • Neurodiversity is finally being talked about more and integrated into training such as equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • There is an increase in organisations that specialise in the recruitment of neurodiverse people.
  • More celebrities are openly sharing their neurodiverse diagnosis or tendencies within the public arena.
  • There is a significant shift and change in the language we use to describe neurodiverse people which is being mass adopted by society.
  • Employers are investing in understanding how to make their organisational culture and environments more ND-friendly and dynamic.
  • Some educational psychology and cognitive reports are even becoming more balanced through highlighting that people have gifts as well as significant difficulties.
  • More people are coming forward and requesting to explore a diagnosis.
  • People are being open about their lived experiences of being neurodivergent with their friends, family and within the public arena.
ACAS estimates that it is 1 in 7 people who are neurodivergent, however the likelihood of this being much higher is very probable. I can confidently state this as there are so many barriers people have historically and continue to face  to this day when trying to receive a correct diagnosis(es) such as being put on incredibly long waiting lists.  Therefore it can be deemed a ‘privilege’ within the neurodiverse community, if you have been able to receive an official and / or correct diagnosis due to the hurdles that can exist.

Knowing our full biological heritage can be so important to so many of us that want access to a diagnosis, as it can hold the key(s) in knowing how to thrive and not just survive within society. However having  better or more informed opportunities to access a diagnosis is only part the neurodiversity legacy that will hopefully unfold and become a reality for more of us.

As the poem above states: “people like you who have chosen to give your time to read these words are now part of how our story begins, evolves and ends”.
Thinking differently is needed in our world more than ever due to the levels of eco-climate and general uncertainty we are all facing together. So exploring ways were we can successfully co-exist between all our thinking and processing tendencies therefore has become essential within our humanity .

If you have the ambition to know more about Neurodiversity but not necessarily the budget to match this desire please don’t worry.

Many fantastic organisations such as Genius Within are very generous with the insights they share about neurodiversity on their websites and social media. Cognassist gives away free training!

Hidden Capacities can also offer limited free training scholarship awards to individuals and social impact organisations who wish to access our Neurodiversity training workshops but were finance would be a barrier. Please contact us at connect@hiddencapacities.org if you would like to be considered for our scholarship scheme.

If we stand together, regardless of our neuro-differences we can make the changes that are happening for neurodiverse people a continued momentum within society rather than just a fashionable trend that doesn’t stand the test of time.

With you in hope & neuro-coexistence.

Introducing How Are You (H.A.Y.) Cambridgeshire & Peterborough (www.HAYCambsPboro.co.uk)

Connecting with others, getting active, learning a new skill, being creative, seeking professional support, exploring the outdoors, volunteering – all of these things (and more) can improve mental wellbeing. The Mobilityways Platform was developed in lockdown by car-sharing pioneers and social enterprise, the Liftshare Group, to support employers meet their net zero goals.

It’s a suite of software tools that enables employers to evidence, track, plan and change their commuter emissions. The Platform is the only software solution dedicated to decarbonising the commute. It provides full visibility of commuting challenges and identifies sustainable travel alternatives for employees.

Uniquely powered by ACEL© (Average Commuter Emissions Level) which is the only standardised methodology for benchmarking and comparing commuter emissions, this allows organisations to track their progress and measure the effectiveness of sustainable travel initiatives.

Estimate your own commuter emissions impacts using the ACEL estimator and check out the ACEL map. How does your region compare?”

How Inclusive is your Team?

How inclusive is your team? Almost every employer on the planet now claims to be an equal opportunities employer, but according to Jane Hatton, CEO of job board social enterprise Evenbreak, that’s rarely the case.

Recruiting diverse candidates may be an important step, but it is only the beginning – if you really want to be an inclusive employer, it’s what comes next that counts.

A recent blog for Pioneers Post by Ellie Grant explores some relevant case studies and also outlines ways to critically evaluate your own business and team - how can you become more inclusive?

This article is well worth a read to see how you can shift your mindset when recruiting and includes others important measures such as ensuring hierarchy isn’t a barrier and allowing people to be their fullest selves at work.
