Athlone to Galway Greenway Route Decided

Great work by local campaigners in the Galway area has resulted in this week's announcement of Route 5 linking Athlone with Shannonbridge, Ballinasloe and Gort on the road to Galway.

The chosen route will form part of a national network link as plans proceed for a greenway all the way from Limerick to Lough Allen in Leitrim, and from Dublin via the Grand and Royal canals to the River Shannon.

Campaigners Light up the City's Bikes!

Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that Dublin Cycling Campaign volunteers were out in force in locations, in all kinds of weather, and all across the 4 local authority areas of Dublin handing out emergency bike lights to Dublin Cyclists! The lights were supplied by the National Transport Authority and the Road Safety Authority and were warmly welcomed by bicycle users.

Other Cyclist.ie campaign groups around the country were also busy distributing these lights, which are of course a legal requirement. All in all, a great show of volunteering, and a great response from the cycling public. Close to 5,000 sets of lights have been distributed by cycling campaigners countrywide! What an achievement! Thanx to all those who helped out.

Official Bike Handover to Lord Mayor

Dublin's new Lord Mayor, Councillor Allison Gilliland, took receipt of her official Lord Mayor's bicycle from members of Dublin Cycling Campaign, in the presence of Dublin City Council's Walking & Cycling Officer, Deirdre Kelly, at a ceremony at Dublin's Mansion House, on Friday 3 December last.

Allison will be using her official bike, which has been fully serviced, on occasional official duties. And doesn't she look resplendent in her Dublin Cycling Campaign bib? Well done to all the Campaign crew ably marshalled by Campaign Secretary Vinnie Meyler.

Bicycle parking has been installed at Coolmine Recycling Centre (beside the fire station) in Dublin 15 following the proposal of Cllr Daniel Whooley at a recent Fingal County Council Meeting.

And in case you missed it, you can watch back our virtual public meeting, held on 23 November 2021, to hear Lar Joye, Dublin Port Heritage Director, talk about cycling route plans for Dublin Port.

Cycling organisations have achieved an important victory: reduced VAT will soon be possible for bicycles and e-bikes. Under the new rules agreed by the Council of the EU, member states will be able to apply reduced VAT rates on the supply, rental and repair of bicycles, including e-bikes. The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), the Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI) and Cycling Industries Europe (CIE) welcome this step, which has the potential to make bicycles and e-bikes more affordable for consumers and further boost the European cycling boom.

The European Commission reports fewer EU road deaths in 2020 compared to the previous year. Note however that motorised transport is still hugely over-represented in fatal crashes across all road-user groups
