Women's Ministers agree on CIM's route towards a new regional agenda

The CIM's new regional agenda includes a strategic triad with the following themes: economic empowerment, parity, and management of peace and security.

Washington DC, December 9, 2021. The Delegates of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM/OAS) - Ministers of Women and high-level gender authorities from nine countries of the continent - met at the fourth session of the CIM Executive Committee 2019-2022. At the meeting, the Delegates initiated the strategic work plan that will guide the efforts of the CIM during the years 2022-2026, delving into issues such as women's economic rights, political rights, gender mainstreaming and articulation with the feminist and broad women's movement in the region.

The participating high-level gender authorities agreed on the guidelines for drafting an Inter-American Model Law on Caregiving, a strategy to support the National Women's Machineries in gender mainstreaming throughout the State, and a greater rapprochement between the CIM and strategic partners from civil society, academia, and the private sector. They also agreed to work to make the issue of women's leadership visible and central to the Ninth Summit of the Americas.

The meeting was led by the Dominican Republic, from their Presidency of the CIM, who highlighted that even in times of resistance and polarization, the region has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality as a good of humanity. For her part, the Executive Secretary of the CIM, Alejandra Mora Mora, presented the advances and the triad that will form the basis of the work of the CIM: economic empowerment, parity, and management of peace and security.

Representing the President of the CIM and Minister of Women of the Dominican Republic, Mayra Jiménez, was Naomi Arboleda, Alternate Delegate, Director of International Relations of the Ministry of Women. Also participating were: Anne Malépart, Manager of Policy, Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) of Canada; Gheidy Gallo Santos, Presidential Advisor for Women's Equity of Colombia; María Inés Castillo, Minister of Social Development of Panama; Marcela Guerrero, Minister of the Status of Women of Costa Rica; María Emilia Cisneros, Adviser for the Secretariat of Human Rights of Ecuador; Fátima Mendoza, National Institute for Women (INMUJERES) of Mexico; María Pía Molero, Vice-Minister of Women of Peru; and Shiefania Jahangier, Deputy Head of the Office of Gender Affairs of Suriname.
The CIM/OAS is the main political forum in the region for the recognition of the human rights of women and gender equality. Since its creation in 1928, the CIM has played a prominent and strategic role in the promotion of women’s rights in the hemisphere.
