H2GO’s Award-Winning Safety Culture Recognized by NC AWWA-WEA for the Second Year in a Row
Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2GO’s strong safety-culture is once again being recognized by the North Carolina American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Member Association of the Water Environment Federation (NC AWWA-WEA). H2GO received the Disaster Preparedness and George W. Burke, Jr. Safety awards from NC AWWA-WEA. This marks the second year in a row they have received both awards and third time in the last five years.
H2GO employees consistently show a commitment to safety and ensuring their coworkers return home to their families every single day. For that reason, H2GO exceeded 3,500 of no time lost because of an injury in 2021. H2GO, who is now over ten years of no time loss due to injury, takes pride in their strong safety culture that has helped them to achieve this crucial milestone. New Safety Manager TJ West looks to continue the strong sense of pride behind safety put in place by former safety manager Brian Griffith, encouraging his fellow coworkers to look out for one another at all times.

H2GO Takes Steps to Develop Reclaimed Irrigation District and Drive Water Conservation
At their regularly scheduled Board of Commissioners Meeting in October, Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2GO’s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the creation of a new article in their Rules and Regulations for Operation of a Water System. Article Nine now details H2GO’s usage and implementation for what would be the first reclaimed water irrigation district in H2GO’s history. The policy states “Reclaimed water may be used for irrigation purposes and for other nonpotable water purposes.” This will help H2GO conserve water treated and distributed from the water system.
“By reducing demand on the RO plant, H2GO will ensure we keep customer water rates as low as possible for the foreseeable future,” said H2GO Executive Director Bob Walker. “This will also allow us to offer lower irrigation rates for those customers using the reclaimed water for nonpotable purposes. We are constantly looking for ways to keep customer rates low.”

Brunswick County Now Accepting Applications for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program
Brunswick County is now accepting applications for LIHWAP, a water/wastewater assistance program, from all eligible applicants.
The LIHWAP, or Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program, is a federally funded program that provides emergency assistance to low-income households to prevent disconnection or provide assistance with reconnection of drinking and wastewater services.
LIHWAP assistance will be made available to households based on a priority group system. To lessen the hardship on those households that have already lost water services or are in jeopardy of losing water services, groups 1 and 2 will be served first. If funds are available, group 3 will be served after groups 1 and 2 are completed.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

- Insulate Pipes
Insulate hot and cold water pipes in the crawlspace below your household as well as in the basement, attic, and exterior walls (if accessible) with SnapOn foam insulation. Ensure foam insulation fits tightly devoid of openings.
- Heat Pipes
Consider covering pipes with UL approved heat tape that has a built-in thermostat to avoid overheating.
- Sprinkler System
Turn off your sprinkler system, and drain all of the water out.
- Drip Faucets
Drip both hot and cold water at faucets in the kitchen and bathroom. This not only keeps water flowing through the pipes, but releases built-up water pressure in the pipes if they should freeze.
- Laundry Room
If there isn’t a faucet in the laundry room to drip, set your washing machine on warm, and start the fill cycle occasionally for a few minutes to course water through the pipes.
- Icemaker
Set your icemaker to make ice (if the icemaker water line runs under house).

- Cabinets
Open cabinet doors below sinks in the kitchen and bath if the cabinets are found on exterior walls, to let inside heat to pipes.
- Garage
Keep garage door closed during extreme cold weather.
- Foundation
For houses that have a crawlspace, make sure the foundation is completely enclosed, and fill any gaps in foundation walls with caulking or expanding foam. Close or cover the foundation vents under house.
- Garden Hose
Disconnect and drain garden hoses.
- Exterior Faucets
Either cover faucets with insulated foam covers, cut off water to exterior faucets and open faucets to drain pipes, or install exterior faucets that cut water supply off inside foundation walls. After the cold weather is gone and you experience a lack of running water, you may have frozen of busted pipes. In this situation, you will need to call a plumber to check this for you.

Fats, Oils, and Grease create major problems in our community sewer systems. Save our sewers! Used cooking oil and grease should always be disposed of properly. Never pour any type of oil down a drain or toilet! Even if the oil is poured slowly into a drain followed with hot water, this will eventually cause problems with your home’s plumbing and the sewer system as a whole. Join the C.O.R.E. Any used cooking oil or grease including vegetable oil, fish oil, bacon grease, chicken fat, and pork fat can be recycled. And, all recycled cooking oil will be used to create Biofuel. Cooking oil recycling reduces sanitary sewer problems and is good for the environment.
