How are you feeling in this season of Advent? Many of us are carrying stress. A new variant of COVID-19 that we know little about is spreading throughout the world. Many in British Columbia are facing the colossal expense and sorrow of having lost their homes to flooding. Others are navigating family politics, the strain of finding gifts or financial instability.
At the same time, there are good reasons to feel more hopeful and more joyful this year than last. Through the miracle of science, an overwhelming majority of Canadians are now vaccinated against COVID-19. Small holiday gatherings, with appropriate precautions, are permitted and safer. Last weekend, buoyed by Christmasy feelings, my partner and I strung up lights along the large bank of windows on the north side of our ninth-floor apartment. Now passersby can see them from down the street.
Regardless of circumstance, this is an easy time of year to feel anxious, but helping others can be a great salve.
So Broadview decided to ask 12 thoughtful people, including faith leaders, advocates and writers, for inspiration on how to show kindness to others during this season.
You can read their ideas here. We hope they help.
Stay well and safe this weekend. Thanks, as always, for reading Broadview.
