Dear Kyoto JALT Chapter Members & Friends,

2021 has gone by so fast. It's already December and soon it will be a new year. We know you all are working hard and we hope that you all are having a good semester while staying safe and healthy.

Before we get to the event and other JALT news, if you could take a few minutes of your time and give us some feedback by filling out this survey by clicking on the icon below or on the link: https://forms.gle/ksT8q54WyeqYR81e7 we would very much appreciate it.

To begin, we would like to direct you to our newly refurbished webpage where you can find information about both chapter and national JALT events, job announcements, important links, and other news. A big thank you to Edward Escobar, our newly elected Webmaster for an excellent job overhauling the design of the site.

As far as upcoming events, next month, on January 22nd, we are proud to host an event on the role of Global Englishes (GE) in language classrooms in Japan. Visit our webpage for details on the four speakers, presentation/workshop titles, abstracts and the event schedule. Join us for what is sure to be a fascinating look into GE as it operates in our context. We hope to see you there on Zoom! Please keep an eye out for any changes or updates on our webpage and/or Facebook group

Regarding the Social Justice + Language Teaching Working Group (SJ+LT WG): This month, the meeting will be facilitated by Mahboubeh Rakhshandehroo. It will be a discussion-based meeting. Mahboubeh will share her slides about multiculturalism and internationalization initiatives at Japanese universities and will talk about some of the activities she chooses for her classes related to multiculturalism. The meeting won’t take more than an hour unless attendees want to continue the discussion. The meeting is Monday, December 20th from 7-8:30 pm. If you are interested in joining the meeting, please email Mike Ellis (interim coordinator) at Maikerudesu@gmail.com to get the zoom link.

Additionally, please mark your calendars for SJ+LT WG’s own ‘My Share’ event on January 12, at 7pm. Share your SJ-related idea for feedback and friendly discussion. Bring your handouts, tasks, assessment rubrics, course plans, or anything connected to SJ. They can be polished best practices, works in progress which you'd like to workshop, or anything in between. For example, Gretchen is planning to talk about a discussion activity she has tried and needs help scaffolding for the lower level language learner. How about you?

Sharers are encouraged to contact Mike Ellis to tell him what they’d like to share and how long they anticipate it will take to introduce. Within 5-10 minutes would be ideal. Of course, feel free to simply offer advice or discuss the ideas presented and not share your own. We're looking forward to discussing lots of great ideas. Join us!

Kind regards,

Richard Sparrow

Osaka JALT Annual General Meeting (AGM) online

Osaka

Event Speaker(s):

Current and prospective Osaka JALT officers

Monday, December 13, 2021 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

It's that time of year again for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) for members and potential members to discuss our chapter operations and other JALT business in the past year and make plans for the coming year, including chapter officer positions, followed by a bit of time to socialize. Nominations for all officer positions are open to Osaka Chapter members up to and during the meeting. Officer positions are for one year, starting January 1st. If an officer position is contested we'll hold an online election after the AGM and before January 1. To get a better sense of our team of officers, here is our current roster.

RSVP to give us an idea of how many to expect, to let us know whether you might be interested in helping the chapter in some way as an officer or otherwise in the coming year, and to get the Zoom link. This is a good chance to learn more about Osaka JALT and to meet several of our officers and regular members, so please join us if you have time. We do hope to see you there, but you can also give us feedback on the RSVP link if you're not able to make it to the online meeting.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion through the Lens of our Learners

Niigata

Event Speaker(s): Namiko Tsuruta

Saturday, December 18, 2021 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

How are modern Japanese learning environments tackling diversity & inclusion? How can we help our learners appreciate and share their own cultures? What does it mean to educate our learners to become "global leaders" in Asia? How can we create more inclusive learning spaces?

Join us for a lively and inspiring workshop delving into these issues and more.

This is a FREE, ONLINE event open to all.

Diversity and inclusion are currently buzz words in many events in Japan, from corporate trainings trickling down to primary and secondary school MEXT-approved textbooks for UN 2030. But in reality, how much of it is for show, and how are modern day Japanese learning environments really tackling diversity and inclusion?

My experience as a returnee, a bilingual English teacher and teacher trainer has given me a unique perspective. I see and hear different perspectives, and they are usually one’s perceived idea of diversity and inclusion from their upbringing and life experiences. Having studied in the West for most of my life, I also feel a strong affiliation with Western philosophy. But from a personal and cultural anthropological perspective, I feel Western values greatly undermine the beauty and uniqueness of Asian cultures; not in the Western world, but through the lens of the East.

How can we then help our Japanese learners who belong to this so-called homogeneous country become more aware to appreciate and share their own culture? I believe opening (rather than withholding) their eyes to the serious social issues in our country and the global issues that will greatly affect us needs to be shared more in the classroom as meaningful discourse.

As global citizens ourselves, what does it mean to educate learners to become “global leaders” in Asia? Will Western approaches to intersectionality resonate with learners in most secondary schools and some universities where the presence of diversity may not be as apparent? What are the roles that each of us, with our unique identities, can play in helping fill-in the gaps?

What about being Japanese? Other countries’ citizens have great pride and come to Japan carrying that national identity with them. How can we empower our Japanese learners to carry that same respect for themselves? What about those in Japan who are segregated, marginalized or have fewer rights due to their ethnicity? How can we create a more inclusive learning space for them? What about people with disabilities? Our neurodiverse learners? How can we address LGBTQ rights more openly?

Please join me and share your cultural perspectives, knowledge and views on diversity and inclusion. Through meaningful activities that reinforce awareness, communication and understanding, let’s help our learners in Japan develop the confidence and skills to clearly express their thoughts and opinions about who they are, how they would like to be seen by others, and show them what they can bring into this world as empowered, Japanese global citizens.

Effects of movie-based pragmatics instruction on JFL learner comprehension of requests

Pragmatics

Event Speaker(s): Khadijah Omar

Monday, December 27, 2021 - 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Pragmatics SIG Winter Zoom

"The effects of movie-based pragmatics instruction on JFL learner comprehension of requests" will be presented by Khadijah Omar (Saga University)

This study explores how movie-based online lessons can assist beginner-level learners of Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) in developing their comprehension of the Japanese request speech act. Materials from movies of Japanese daily life were used for online lessons for the experiment. The findings indicated that pragmatics training is effective, but it has to be well-planned. It was also found that it is important to have an instructor for the online courses to guide students. Using movie-based online lessons holds promise in helping students develop their awareness of Japanese requests.

Khadijah Omar is from Malaysia. She came to Fukuoka in 2015 to further her studies and recently completed her PhD at Kyushu University. Khadijah used to be a secondary school teacher, and now works at several different universities as a part-time instructor. Her research interests are interlanguage pragmatics, CALL, and intercultural communication. She enjoys cooking and loves strawberries.

Davey Young

PhD Candidate, Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies, Waseda University

Lecturer, Department of English Studies, Sophia University

Outgoing Chair, Supporting Students with Disabilities Interest Section, TESOL International

“You are being invited to participate in research in completion of a PhD dissertation at the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda University. The research is focused on English language teachers’ orientation towards inclusive education for students with disabilities using the Japanese postsecondary context as a case. As such, please only complete the survey if you currently teach (part- or full-time) in such a context. The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will help fill a critical research gap, as little is currently known about English language teachers’ preparedness to teach students with disabilities. Please note that participation is completely voluntary and anonymous, and that your consent will be indicated by submitting a completed response. Finally, you are encouraged to forward this message and link to your colleagues. Thank you in advance for your participation!
