VELTHA'S NEWSLETTER N°19
Veltha is very grateful for your support and interest in what we do to perform research and enable knowledge exchange in the field of Circular Economy.
On behalf of the whole team,
we wish you happy holidays and a happy beginning of 2022!
The new edition of the Policy Lab hit the road!
Yesterday, December 16, 2021, we laid the foundation for the new edition of the Policy Lab 3.0
We had a pleasure to welcome regional representatives from all over Europe, ready to share experiences and bring up the dominant challenges they are facing in the adoption and implementation of a circular economy strategy. A fruitful discussion regarding the state of the art of the circular economy in the regions was brought to life, fuelled by the results of our previous research and the inputs shared by the participants.

This Policy Lab represents a turning point in which we start reaping the benefits of our previous research activities, witnessing how they are ready to be translated into practical results.
Together with the regional representatives, we have explored the new opportunities for the 21-27 programming period and we are looking forward to diving into this new journey to turn these opportunities into EU project proposals.

Thank you all for attending the session!

Loops 2.0: Episode #5

Thank you all for supporting this initiative!

Veltha would like to thank everyone who participated in our exciting Loops season II as guests and as participants, showing interest and support in this initiative aimed at fostering knowledge exchange from research to business.

Veltha also would love to thank everyone who tuned in to our fifth Loops 2.0 episode, which streamed live on December 16, 2021, at 11:00 CET.

We hope you all enjoyed this thought-provoking episode that let us dive into the world of raw minerals. Our special guests were Maria Tripiana, the project coordinator for ION4RAW, and Dr. Nader Akil, the exploitation manager for TARANTULA.
The demand for raw materials is increasing, and because they are critical to the European economy, new methods must be developed to meet this challenge. Several innovative projects are currently underway across Europe and we invited two of them who are tackling the issue in novel ways:

ION4RAW aims at designing new energy, material, and cost-efficient mineral processing technology to recover by-products from primary sources.
TARANTULA intends to develop a toolkit of novel, efficient, and flexible metallurgical technologies with high selectivity and recovery rates.

As the episode explores the world of raw materials, we learn about the innovative technologies which both projects are developing to meet the increasing demand for raw materials, as well as novel visions that show how change can be made. Both projects are utilizing circular approaches to maximize the potential of Europe's inner wealth.

How digital platforms are enabling circular economy innovation

Technology plays such a big role in our life that we don’t often think about how important it is and the role it plays. As everything is becoming more digital, the world is changing accordingly, witnessing the evolution of processes that can now instantaneously and virtually happen, bringing together the key actors responsible for driving change, in no time. Circular economy innovation, at the same time, has grown across Europe in many ways, and novel technologies are being used to create exciting innovations in the field. Digitalisation helps connect data, devices, and decisions for the implementation of a circular economy strategy, a vital step toward meeting climate goals and improving Europe’s resource and energy efficiency, while promoting digital innovation across the world.  Visit the blog and learn about the initiatives that are demonstrating the critical role that digital platforms play in enabling the circular economy innovation.

Have you ever wondered what we actually mean when we talk about raw materials?

Raw materials can be defined as substances in unprocessed or minimally processed states, as well as any matter coming from agriculture, forestry, fishing, or mineral in its natural form or which has undergone the transformation required to prepare it for the international market in substantial volumes. Raw materials can be divided into two categories. Primary Raw Materials (PRMs), are naturally occurring substances that have not been subjected to manufacturing transformation or chemical changes after being recovered. Natural gas and crude oils are clear examples of basic raw materials. Secondary Raw Materials (SRMs) have no clear legal definition in the European Union: they can be identified as materials that can be recycled and then brought back into the economy as new raw materials. Find out more about it in our blog and go discover the role that a circular approach can play in the realm of these materials.
