Dear friends and partners,
“This is like LeBron coming to the Lakers.” That’s how the Dean of the USC School of Education voiced his enthusiasm that the Board has selected Alberto Carvalho as LAUSD’s next Superintendent. I share the excitement and look forward to welcoming our all-star pick to Los Angeles’ schools.
With a long-tenured track record of success in Miami, deep knowledge of teaching and learning, and unique ability to act as both an agent of change and a unifying force, he is the right person to lead LAUSD students out of this pandemic into a better future.
Mr. Carvalho comes to Los Angeles with more than an illustrious resume—his personal journey as an immigrant and English learner who overcame homelessness has undoubtedly ingrained in him the transformative power of a great education. We have no doubt that he will continue to lead with empathy, and work alongside parents, students, teachers, and the broader community to realize a vision of opportunity and success for all our kids.
When Mr. Carvalho joins us early next year, his first priority will be to continue our Covid recovery efforts and support students academically and socio-emotionally. As we near the end of this unprecedented semester, I’m gratified that 100% of our schools have remained open since August and that more than 86% of our eligible students 12 and older have been vaccinated, along with every adult on our campuses.
Our goal is to keep kids safe and in the classroom for in-person learning, and my commitment will continue to be ensuring that students and families are at the center of our decision-making. I Welcome Supt. Carvalho to that effort in Los Angeles.
Onward,
