20 Years of Keeping the Community Connected...And Coming Full Circle
As 2021 comes to a close, so does our 20th anniversary. We take a look back at our humble beginnings, with gratitude for what we've become and the community around us. In a way, we've come full circle.
Our history is deeply rooted with the now-closed Black River High School & Middle School - and, specifically with history education. A little known factoid is that we were founded by a team that former BR Social Studies teacher Sue Pollender put together. They wanted to create a local facility where her students could produce documentaries for the national History Day competitions, which was becoming an increasingly popular interest. Lo & behold, Sue learned that Ludlow could have it own public access TV station, which could house the equipment they needed and provide the support that they would need.. and not just for students but for the whole community. And so, in 2001, "LPCTV" was born (now known as Okemo Valley TV).
Sue went on to serve on the LPCTV Board of Directors for over a decade. And among the early student producers of National History Day documentaries were Noah Schmidt & Newt Rose (both BRHS Class of 2012), who, all these years later, are serving on our Board of Directors. Noah is now the Board President, while Newt is the chair of our Community Engagement Committee. Noah says “Being on the Board of the station is a great way to give back to different facets of the community...Making the decision to come back and live in my hometown, it was obvious to me to get involved.”
