Congratulations on making through!

It was a challenging semester, and we should all be proud of ourselves and of our community for making it through. We hope that DH@SDSU has helped-- with our programming, resources at teachdh.sdsu.edu, and overall ethics of care.

While the future is uncertain, we plan to fully reopen the DH Center in Spring with a mix of in-person, virtual, and hybrid events. We will continue to prioritize our students' and faculty's safety and wellbeing, and ask for your ongoing flexibility and patience should future pivots be necessary. We acknowledge that change is tough and encourage you to continue using DH as a medium for expression.

Looking forward: Digital Humanities Showcase,
May 6, 2022

Due to Covid, we had to postpone our culminating event of the year-- the DH Showcase-- for the last two years. We are excited to announce its return, as well as the re-opening of the Digital Humanities Center: Friday, May 6, 2022 from 10 am to noon. Our Spring 2022 showcase will be a huge, glorious three-year (2020, 2021, 2022) celebration of digital work created before and during the pandemic. We invite students, faculty, staff, and recent alumni to submit proposals from the past three years. Let’s share and  celebrate!

The DH Initiative seeks a new Associate Director!

DH@SDSU seeks applications for its next Associate Director to serve with Dr. Pam Lach, DH Librarian starting AY22-23. Information about the Initiative and our Leadership Transition Plan is below:

Our DH Initiative is poised to become a leader in ethical, equitable DH praxis. As our program has matured, we have garnered regional, national, and international attention. Likewise, our DH Center in SDSU Library is held up as a model of a user- and values-driven DH space. The unique partnership between the colleges, particularly CAL, and the Library is a critical, and noteworthy, component of our hard-earned success. We plan to build on this foundation both on campus and beyond. In the next 3-5 years, we envision DH@SDSU taking the lead (in partnership with SJSU, with whom we are seeking grant funding) in building a CSU-wide DH network of distributed expertise while strengthening our SD|DH regional network, which SDSU has led since receiving a 2015 NEH Digital Humanities Startup Grant. At the same time, we envision growing the unique local manifestations of DH on campus and in the new Mission Valley space, emphasizing curricular, research, and professional needs for San Diego and the broader border region. A DH education is both practical and about praxis, as it teaches critical digital literacy and skills relevant to the digital economy. To further prepare our students for success in the emergent workplace and cultural landscape, we are developing a robust curricular program, beginning with a minor and certificate in Digital Humanities as well as a GE (category E) course that provides an introduction to DH and to critical digital literacy. The new Associate Director will help shape and implement this vision, lending a fresh perspective and new skills and resources to enhance our community and build on our previous successes.

Faculty interested in applying should submit the following to Dr. Jessica Pressman by January 30: 1) personal statement/vision for DH@SDSU, 2) explanation of your previous participation in/relationship to DH@SDSU, 3) relevant CV stating DH-related activities, research, teaching, etc. as well as leadership roles, fundraising experience, event organizing, etc., and 4) Brief acknowledgement that the department chair/director knows the person is applying.

Currently only CAL tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply, as the associated assigned time is supported through CAL funds.

Opportunities for DH Faculty

The Mellon-funded Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium (DEFCon) invites faculty to apply for grants in support of digital ethnic studies. They have several funding opportunities for digital humanities courses and program development, as well as paid mentorship opportunities.

DEFCon Teaching Fellowships ($2500) support the development of a course. Applications are due January 10, 2022.

DEFCon Capacity Building Fellowships ($5000) support the development of curriculum (e.g. minors, certificates). Applications are due January 10, 2022.

DEFCon Mentorships ($2500) are opportunities for faculty with experience in digital humanities to share their expertise with fellowship recipients. Applications are due January 15, 2022.

They will be holding an informational webinar on December 13th at 6pm Eastern/3pm Pacific to answer questions about the funding opportunities.

Recaps of the Fall Semester

Our Fall 2021 calendar was intended to support and enhance teaching and learning with events geared towards intellectual recovery and the refreshing of our sense of community. From book talks to tools and design workshops, we learned about how Digital Humanities encompasses eco-criticism, supports postcolonial archives, and promotes theoretical critique of neoliberalism.

Our virtual events allowed us to expand our community, across the CSU, the United States, and the globe, including Canada, Brazil, the UK, the Philippines, and India.

Looking Forward to Spring 2022 Semester

We plan to learn from the past two years and embrace hybridity as we enter 2022. With hybrid events whose modality supports their purpose, we will be offering ways to learn and connect online, in-person, and in creatively, hybridized ways.
