If you do one thing this week... 'Very few major technologies emerge suddenly… They’re usually the product of gradual tinkering and experimentation. Things get slowly refined… The new tech starts being used in real-world circumstances, but mostly in niche areas' . I've written before about the concept of the long nose of innovation but this week Clive Thompson had a great description of it based on a conversation he had with the originator of the idea, Bill Buxton.

On a related topic Ben Evans this week published his annual big presentation 'exploring macro and strategic trends in the tech industry'. This year it's called ‘Three Steps to the Future’.
Links of the Week...
  • Andrew Chen is a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz whose writing on startups, growth and network effects I've followed for a few years. He's got a new book out on these topics called The Cold Start Problem which looks great
  • (Friend of ODF) Colin Lewis had a great presentation on the growth of retail media. Check out this short thread first, and then this deck
  • In World War II Rita Levi-Montalcini spent years hiding in her bedroom in Italy, but used the time to discover how the nervous system is wired and later became the first Nobel Prize winner to live to be 100. Truly inspiring
  • A QC asks on Twitter: 'Can someone with some photoshop skills make my profile photo Christmassy?'. Twitter obliged as only Twitter can.
The Unfiltered History Tour is an interactive guide created by Vice news, exploring the British Museum’s most disputed artefacts, using stories told by the people from the countries they were removed from. Nicely done.
'The Admiralty System or NATO System is a method for evaluating collected items of intelligence.'  Useful (HT @JustinLines1)
And finally... Google's year in search for 2021 is as compelling as ever and this year in particular, pretty emotional
Weeknotes:  This week I was training digital marketing and also did some work with NHS leaders. Next week I'm kicking off a new project with Shiseido but also starting to wind down for a good festive break. It's been quite the year so I'll be taking a longer break and I'm so looking forward to it. Next week's Fish Food will be the last episode until the new year.

If you're interested in finding out more about my virtual workshops, consultancy, or you'd like me to talk (virtually or IRL) to your team do drop me a note.
