Many lakes in our region have fallen victim to invasive species, including zebra mussels, Eurasian water milfoil, Variable water milfoil, water chestnut, Curly-leaf pondweed, Brittle Naiad, and many other invasives.
Vermont has 800+ lakes and ponds. We work in conjunction with Vermont’s Agency of Natural Resources (ANR). ANR provides training and “Greeter” education props and supplies.
Over the last 6 years The Friends of Waterbury Reservoir and greeters have:
-
provided and coordinated staff and volunteers to assist in mitigating the impact of invasive species;
-
funded the greeter program with the help of local towns, foundations and private contributions;
-
intercepted Brittle Naiad, Curly Leaf Pondweed, Eurasian Water Milfoil – on their way into the Reservoir.
Now we need your help
Together we can help mitigate infestation of invasive species and maintain a healthy Waterbury Reservoir.
Use of the Reservoir is expanding in leaps and bounds, stressing surrounding residents, users, and surface-use rangers.
Funding the “Greeter” program to cover 3 boat launch sites for 18 weeks costs $15,000 annually.
Please make an annual gift to The Friends of Waterbury Reservoir. Time is of the essence. The Friends have worked diligently for 6 years to keep invasives out of the lake. Now we need your financial support protecting this very special resource. Together we can protect the Waterbury Reservoir for wildlife and future users to enjoy.
Thanks for your financial support,
D.R. Eric Chittenden, President, Friends of Waterbury Reservoir
