New Westminster Sept. 9th 1881
My dear Nannie,
I have just come down the River and have only a few minutes to write before the
mail closes - I was up the country last week with Sir Chas. & Lady Tupper & party - It was quite
a holiday trip for me and I saw a great many old friends all of them desired to be kindly
remembered to you - Among there were Mr. & Mrs. McLeod, Mr Keefer, Hamlin & c - of the
Engineer staff and Mr. Tuck who is with the contractor - his wife and children are staying at
Dalhousie. - You must call on Lady Tupper when she returns home - They were really very kind
- I am glad to learn that the children are enjoying themselves - we shall finish our field work
about the end of this month and are almost sorry as the weather is now delightful - love to all.
Yours ever
M. Smith
PS - I have just received your letter of the 22nd Aug. with enclosures (since writing above) I had
an idea the little imp was 4 years old you must give her something from Papa. Read the full text hereLot 81 South Hazelton, B.C. 3 Jun 1938 3c Cover & interesting contents

Dear Boy,
I guess you must think I have forgot you.
But I sure haven't for there is never a day goes by but I think of you and would like to see you. I
guess you will be surprised to hear that I am at Leslies and Henrys. I didn't expect to be here so
soon But our gold washing at cotton wood didn't work out as it should. The place that we were
going to work was being worked by another party.
And I only had a Dollar left and George didn't have very much so we couldn't aford to stay there
to long and then mabynot find anything.
So I thought the best thing to do was to get out while the getting was good.
So we beat our way out here. Bud and Leslie got a letter from you yesterday.
You said in Buds letter that you might be in the mine this winter. Ale told me to tell you not to go
in the mine for he said life was to short for to take chances on ruining your health in a old mine.
And I don't want you to go in the mine either Dear.
Ale Leslie Henry and myself were loading posts at South Hazeton today.
Henrys folks are all well. Bud is down at Carnaby skidding out posts and George and Charlie
are cutting cord wood.
Leslie is giving George a grub stake and he is cutting on speck.
It is offel dry here they need rain bad. I opened your trunk and looked after your gun and clothes
to see if they were damp or not. Mrs. Letoile said to tell you Hullo for her.
Well Dear I guess I will close for this time.
With heaps of love and kisses
