Thank you volunteers!

In last week’s mailer, one of our most dedicated and frequent volunteers was not included in the list acknowledging all their hard work. Thank you Doug Lee for all you do to help Abernethy!

We want to thank the parent volunteers for all their hard work to make lunchtime possible for Abernethy students. Their work, not only during lunch, but also with helping set up and take down the lunch tables and chairs, and monitor recesses has been invaluable. We could not have done it without them!

Students Thank Parent Volunteers

This week Abernethy Students made thank you notes for the parent volunteers who do so much for students and the school. Below you will find a few samples of the letters they wrote:
All of these thank you letters are thanks to the hard work of Adam Lempert, who took the time to make grade-appropriate cards for the students to work with. Adam has also been integral to the lunchtime set-up, break-down and duty schedules, as well as all the other work he has done daily in supporting students meeting their safety needs. ATTA WAY, Adam!

Lost and Found Round-Up

Greetings Abernethy Families,

There are several nice looking winter jackets and warm sweaters/sweatshirts in the Lost and Found currently, so think about if your child is missing something. Just as a reminder, access into the building is limited due to covid restrictions but on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of this week, I will take the lost and found items out of the building and place them in the outside corner by the Kindergarten classroom, near the garden. Items will be placed back inside at 3:15pm.

Any items that are not picked up will be donated to families in need after the break on Friday, January 7th at 3:15pm.

Wishing you a happy week and try to stay warm. 🥶

NAEP Testing for 4th Graders

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Abernethy 4th graders will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Tuesday, January 27, 2022.  NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The assessment is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.

Your child is able to take a mathematics and reading assessment. In addition to subject-area questions, students voluntarily complete NAEP survey questions. These questions provide valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and outside of the classroom. More information about NAEP survey questions is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section “What Questions Are on the Test?”

The assessment takes approximately 2 hours for most students, which includes transition time, directions, and completion of survey questions.

The information collected is used for statistical purposes only.

  • Your child’s grades will not be affected.
  • Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question.
  • While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify me in writing by sending an email to cpetersen@pps.net by 12/17/21.

There is no need to study in preparation for NAEP, but please encourage your child to do their best. A brochure that explains what participation in NAEP means for you and your child is available at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/parents/2012469.pdf. Contact me or your child’s teacher at 503-916-6190 or via email if you have any questions.

We are excited that our school is participating in NAEP. We know that Abernethy’s students will show what our nation’s students know and can do.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christie M. Petersen

Join the PTA!

Join the Abernethy PTA and support our mission to enrich our children’s educational experience through PTA programs, events and classroom support. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the nation’s first parent group in schools, has promoted the safety, education and health of children and families for more than 100 years. There are many reasons to join the Abernethy PTA:

  • Joining the PTA gives you a voice. By getting involved, you'll be part of the solution.
  • Becoming a member of the PTA gives you the opportunity to vote on the PTA budget and important decisions regarding the school.
  • Stay up-to-date on Abernethy news and happenings.
  • It's a great way to get to know the teachers, principal and staff of our school and connect with other parents.
  • It’s a great way to get to know your school community, share and exchange ideas.
You can find more information about the PTA and ways to get involved here: supportabernethy.org/

Safety Reminder during Arrival and Pick Up

Please use extreme caution when picking up your child. Please drive less than 20 mph in our school zones especially from 8:15-9:00 am and from 3:00-3:30 pm.  Please be sure to park on the correct side of the street and walk to pick up your child.  Thank you to all the parents and families who are so very careful each day.

This message is being sent as last week we had several witnesses who saw another adult driving quickly around the Rose Garden on Tamarack and Orange and continued to drive over the school zone speed to the intersection of Orange and 16th where a child darted out into the street and there was a near miss of hitting the child.  To the unknown person who was driving recklessly, please be reminded that being late during dismissal does not give cause to endanger the other students. Please adhere to the posted speed limit and drive with extreme caution in the future.

*** Reminder: Winter break is right behind the corner. The last day of school is Friday 12/17. We return from break 1/3/2022. ***
