Hi <<First Name>>,
Happy holiday season! Thank you for the contributions that you’ve made to your EA group in 2021. It’s been a year of growth for many groups, with about 5 x more people participating in fellowships than in 2020, and approximately 30 groups professionalising through funding from CEA and the EA Infrastructure Fund. We are hugely grateful for all the work that group organisers put into creating engaging and welcoming spaces for people to discuss effective altruism ideas – your efforts are crucial to the building of a vibrant and active community that can tackle the world’s most pressing problems!
In this month’s newsletter:
-
The new and improved process for groups to easily get flexible funding for future group costs
-
Many part-time paid and volunteer opportunities you could share with your members
-
Discussion group content from EA Anywhere
-
A spotlight on EA UCLA
All the best,
Joan, Rob, Huw, Catherine, Jessica, Kuhan, Alex and Will (Groups team, CEA)

Group Support Funding is now MUCH faster and easier! Please apply!
You can now apply for a lump sum to spend flexibly – no need to have your budget sorted in advance. Or you can apply for rapid funding to get funds within 2 or 7 days.
Group Support Funding covers event costs like food and venue hire, as well as advertising, books, software, subscriptions, and other group costs. These funds are available for all EA groups that are not already on a CEA Community Building Grant, including city groups, university groups, national groups, online groups, and specialist groups such as cause or career specific groups.
We believe most groups could usefully spend more money than they have in the past, so we encourage you to apply!
The main type of funding is now the flexible Group Support Grant
-
You apply for a lump sum of money to pay for future expenses for up to 12 months. You don’t need to know your expenses or your total budget in advance – just apply for a lump sum and use our guidelines to help you decide how to spend it.
-
You can reapply when your funding gets low, and if you don’t spend all your funds you can return the money or ask to use the funds in your next application.
-
There is no specific limit on the amount of money groups can request, but we’ve set some suggested amounts, which range from 3000 USD per year for small groups, through to 12,000 USD per year for larger groups.
-
The application and review processes require far less information than in the past.
-
Groups will get their funds within 2 weeks (US, UK), or 3 weeks (other countries), but you can request for your grant to be processed faster if needed.
We think most groups should apply for a Group Support Grant!
We are also offering Rapid Group Support Funding, which is for urgent requests for reimbursement or for costs that need to be paid within 1 month. You should get your funds within 2 working days (US, UK groups), or 7 working days (other countries).

More information. Deadline for applying is 1 January.

The EA Forum is running its first end-of-year review – an event where people review and vote for the pre-2021 posts that seem most valuable to them. The Forum is offering up to 5,000 USD in prizes for reviews of Forum posts, and another 5,000 USD for authors who improve their posts during the review. This could be a nice chance for your group members to try out some public EA writing that may be less nerve-wracking than a full post.

Group Spotlight: Effective Altruism at UCLA, USA
“We attribute our growth and surge in leadership ambition to the support and guidance of the EA community. Two of our organizers attended a University Organizer Retreat in August of 2021 which not only gave them concrete tools to expand the club but also super charged their (infectious) excitement to be a part of our growing community."
“We are piloting a High Impact Project program which will support driven members to pursue their EA interests and create a piece of work with value to the EA community. Members have proposed projects that include research, literature reviews, and videos communicating EA concepts. Each of these will be posted to the EA Forum upon their completion. Our purpose is to support members with an itch to apply their EA knowledge to the real world to make the first step towards doing so.”
