BROOKFIELD STATE SCHOOL’S 150th CELEBRATIONS
October 2021
Friend, Pastor Lyn Nuggin, Pastor Taiyo Kondo, Laura Geitz, Pastor Malcolm Scanlan, Sheryl Scanlan & Rev Glen Schweitzer
The 150th year celebrations at Brookfield State School started 10 October with a Thanksgiving Service in the magnificent school Hall on Boscombe Road.  Organised by Brookfield Kenmore Churches Together and with the enthusiastic support of the school community and representatives of all ten churches in the district we met to praise God for his gracious provision in this district.

Pastor Lyn Nuggin (Fuel CC) opened the Service. Jonathan Kemp (Kenmore-Brookfield Anglicans), Pastor Taiyo Kondo (Fuel Christian Church) and Malcolm Scanlan (Brookfield Uniting Church) led the worship.  Sarah McIntosh (Riverlife Baptist) with ex-BSS students, Jenny Wallace and Scout Sommerfeld, provided the singing lead; Josh McIntosh on keyboard with Anna Roberts (violin), Grace Kikuchi (cello} and Chris Mills on (gentle) drums gave a beautiful instrumental backing.  Justin Prestidge and Bill Schneider (local Scripture Union chaplains), and Sheryl Scanlan offered the “Prayers of The People” segment followed by the Lord’s Prayer and Laura Geitz and Lucy Jessup (Grade 6, BSS) presented the Scripture Readings.

Dr John Roulston AM (Brookfield Uniting Church) closed the service with a Benediction and Blessing.

To God Be All Glory!

16 October Brookfield State School’s 150th year celebrations kicked off with the “Welcome to Country” performed by Turrbal Tribe elder, Maroochy Barambah.
His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC CVO, the then Governor of Queensland “opened the Open Day” and presented a commemorative plaque.

A brief history of Christmas trees

Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert may be credited with making Christmas trees popular in Britain, but the tradition actually dates back millennia. The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for thousands of years. Pagans used branches to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. The Romans used fir trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia while Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. It’s impossible to be sure when fir trees were first used as Christmas trees, but it is thought to date back about 1000 years to northern Europe. Many early Christmas trees seem to have been hung upside down from the ceiling using chains. Other early Christmas trees were cherry or hawthorn plants that were put into pots and brought inside so they would hopefully flower at Christmas time. People who couldn't afford a real plant made pyramids of timber that they decorated to look like a tree with paper, apples and candles.

Baby Jesus was the first “star”

These days we place a star or angel on top of the tree, but in the early days a figure of the baby Jesus was used. The first Christmas Trees came to Britain sometime in the 1830s but they really became popular in 1841 when Queen Victoria’s German husband Prince Albert had a Christmas Tree set up in Windsor Castle. In Victorian times, the tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars. In many parts of Europe, candles are still used to decorate Christmas trees.

Summer School: Introduction to Public Theology

8 week course, Tue 11th Jan 2022 -  Tue 1st Mar 2022.
Tuesday nights, 6.30 - 9.30pm
In person at Wesley House, or online via Zoom

What does it mean for faith communities to engage in public discourse? Is there a common good? Can “God-talk” still make a positive contribution to society? You are invited to explore these questions over 8 weeks in the first cooperative Summer School. During the course we will investigate the nature of public theology, explore pop culture, examine forms of public dialogue from political speeches to viral memes, and stage our own conversation on four critical social issues in our time.

We will meet for 8 sessions on Tuesday nights (in person and online), starting on 11 January, 2022. For those who are joining us online, we will send you the Zoom link closer to the start date.

Project Plenty videos as discussion starters

Project Plenty seeks to support and resource the priority directions which the whole UCA has identified for its life across Qld in the coming years. Those directions gather around four pillars – discipleship, transforming communities, fit for purpose, and life together (one church).

Videos are being produced which share what is already happening across the church, to stimulate imagination in other contexts.
Check out this growing video collection  grouped around the four themes. Could you play one in worship, or at Church Council, or in home groups, as a catalyst for thinking about new possibilities in your space?
