Haunting Year-Round

According to data from HauntPay's 2021 Haunt Industry Report, more than 50% of haunts open for just 11-20 days out of the year. More and more, however, we are seeing trends of haunts looking for ways to extend their runs and have a presence outside of the typical Halloween season - just look at the over 100 haunts opening for holiday events this year! HauntPay has released a list of of 6 Holidays You Should Open Your Haunt that Aren't Halloween. From Valentine's Day to Prom Season, there are plenty of ideas to host themed events throughout the year to excite your fan base and energize your team.

Haunts Giving Back

Leeco Haunted Forest in Leslie County, KY is hosting "A Christmas Special" to raise money for cancer patients. “Cancer took the lives of a lot of my family members. I’ve seen how hard it is and what it can do to people,” said Event Coordinator Jordan Joseph. “If we can just try to help people out, it’d be the best thing to do.” Instead of Leeco Haunted Forest's normal scary fare, this holiday event is created for families to celebrate Christmas with festive rooms, photo ops, and even a visit with Santa. The event continues this coming weekend on December 17th & 18th. Admission is $10 per adult, $5 per child (7-12), and $3 per child (6 and under).

Conventions & Mixers

Season's Screamings, the holiday event from the team at Midsummer Scream, takes place December 17th - 19th at the Pasadena Convention Center. The event features more than 200 exhibitors, Hall of Yuletide Spirits mini haunts & displays, live entertainment, and an assortment of festively frightful panels and presentations. Friday highlights include "Poltergeists & Paramours Christmas Spooktacular", variety and fashion show produced by horror director and fashion designer Ama Lea. The show is co-hosted by legendary horror actress Barbara Crampton (“You’re Next”, “From Beyond”, “Re-Animator”) and Angel Melanson, editor of Fangoria.com. Performers include Sean Keller, the Nguyen Twinz, Dos Feratu, Sam Wineman, Buster Balloon, and more. Saturday at 3:00 p.m. theme park animatronics legend Garner Holt hosts "The Making of Haunted Mansion Holiday", where he will discuss how his company brought Jack Skellington to Disneyland with the holiday attraction overlay. Disney fans will also enjoy Sunday's 5:00 p.m. panel "The Making of 'Muppets Haunted Mansion'", where director Kirk Thatcher and crew will take fans behind-the-scenes of the Halloween special that mashed the Muppets with Disney's iconic Haunted Mansion. Other holiday programming highlights include "Peepshow Menagerie Presents 'Island of the Misfit Tease'" burlesque show (Saturday at 6:00 p.m.), "Ghost Stories of Christmas Eve's Past" (Sunday at 1:15 p.m.) hosted by historian Lisa Morton, and "Krampus: The Devil You Don't Know" (Sunday at 2:30 p.m.) hosted by leading expert and Krampus LA founder Al Ridenour. Each day will also feature a Krampus Procession coordinated by Krampus LA. Tickets start at $30 - $35 for 1-day general admission and can be purchased online.

Transworld's Halloween & Attractions Show has announced details for their Windy City Pre-Show Haunt Tour. On Wednesday, March 16th, HAA Show Attendees can experience a full day of haunts. The day begins with a visit to HellsGate Haunted House for a lights-on tour and then continues to Disturbia Haunted House, Massacre Haunted House, and Basement of the Dead Haunted House - all of whom will be doing their full show with actors. Haunted Asylums: Public Memory & Community Storytelling

Haunts based on real-life events and atrocities have often drawn criticism and spurred debate within communities. In an article published in The Pennsylvania Communication Annual, 75, in September 2019, Assistant Professor Kelly C. George, Ph.D of Immaculata University explored how Pennhurst Asylum haunted attraction sparked a public debate and became an occasion for storytelling about what Pennhurst meant to the surrounding Pennsylvania community. Through analyzing 224 relevant news stories, reader letters, and comments appearing in newspapers from 2010 - 2011, Dr. George used the Pennhurst Asylum haunt as a case-study to learn about the ethical debates over approaching historical trauma in popular representations and entertainment.
