Bringing significant benefits to African communities, especially in Zambia

Despite the pandemic, we have been working to progress our various projects.

We are delighted to report that the roof of the classroom block at the new secondary school for girls in Chama is now on. The walls are built, the verandah is ready and the final work fitting doors, windows, floors and ceilings is now being addressed.

Today, we are launching the Fitting Out Appeal to complete the interior of classroom block.

The Livingstone Initiative is also busy with other projects including the Zambia-Scotland Medical Exchange and supporting the revival of tourism.

Zambia is open once again to visitors.

Read on for more details and video of the new roof and other exciting information...

The Roof has been raised!

An update on progress at the school
Drone camera footage of the roof on the classroom block : 4 classrooms, 4 teachers' studies and 2 administrative offices

There has been great excitement up at the school site in Tembwe, Chama. The beautiful, new blue roof has now been raised on the block of 4 classrooms, 4 teachers' studies and 2 administration offices.

We received a huge response to our Raising the Roof Appeal and we reached our target with the help of our wonderful partners and donors.

Materials were purchased and transported to Tembwe and the roof
was completed in October, well before the arrival of the annual rains.
This building is huge... 150 ft x 50 ft  (43m x 15m) and with a shady, open verandah along the entire length of one side.

Next Steps..
We are so close to finishing this first block of classrooms, so that young girls in Chama can have an education that will allow them to have choice in their lives... but we need more help. Children today are living in challenging circumstances throughout the world and the young girls in Chama need all the support we can give them to ensure that their world is a better one.

Focusing on
The Power of Education
There has never been a more crucial time to focus on the power of education and the completion of St Mary's Anglican School for Girls in Chama. We are making steady progress thanks to your generosity, but we have to keep the momentum going to complete the next stage.

Fitting Out the Classroom Block

This fitting out work involves installing windows and doors and completing the ceilings and floors, then decorating. Once this classroom block is finished and the building has been signed off by the Education and Planning authorities, the school will open initially to local girls... hopefully at the start of the new school year in January 2023. Once the main dormitory is constructed, boarders from further afield can then start to attend.

For this next stage, we are today launching the new Fitting Out Appeal.

First, we need £12,000 to install :
  • 17 doors
  • 41 windows
  • Glass panes, security grills, burglar bars, locks and padlocks.

Then, a further £9,000 to pay for:
  • Hard-wearing flooring throughout the building
  • Wall plastering and painting

Your donations will help to obtain the necessary supplies to complete the classroom block.

Some additional funding is also being raised in Zambia to help your donation go further, but any help you can give at this time will be invaluable.

Thank you.
Merry Christmas to you all and a very Happy New Year!

The Zambia-Scotland Medical Exchange

Online Zoom training planned by UK ENT team to support
Dr Alex Malambo and the ENT Clinic in Livingstone
Dr Alex Malambo, our first Zambian candidate in the Livingstone Zambia-Scotland Medical Exchange back in 2014, has graduated from his 5-year Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) surgical training in Nairobi and is now running the ENT clinic in Livingstone one week per month and also working at the University Hospital in Lusaka the rest of the time.

Thanks to the continued support and help of Mr Haytham Kubba and his team at the Royal Hospital for Children and University in Glasgow, online Zoom training is being developed to help the ENT nursing staff in Livingstone and support Dr Malambo. This training is expected to start in 2022.

Supporting Tourism now that Zambia has reopened!
The magnificent main entrance to the David Livingstone Safari Lodge, Livingstone, Zambia
Zambia has re-opened to overseas visitors and its friendly people are ready and waiting to welcome you, your families and friends to this gorgeous country. The Livingstone Initiative is continuing to help raise awareness of Zambia as a tourism destination to help boost the local economy and attract more tourists.

We realise that holiday plans are difficult to make with the ongoing changing circumstances caused by the pandemic and its variants. Zambia is currently off the UK's Red List and is open to visitors.

The Zambian Government is preparing to reduce the cost of visitor visas by 50% and this is expected to be put in place once ratified by parliament for the start of 2022.

Llvingstone's stunning David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa has just reopened its magnificent doors on the banks of the Zambezi just upstream from the Victoria Falls.

The Victoria Falls, Zambia's wildlife and national parks, the thrills and spills of adventure activities in Livingstone are all open for business.

Why not book your holiday, come to Zambia, tour the Falls and join in all that Livingstone and Zambia have to offer?

Zambia looks forward to welcoming you.

Thanks, too, to all our Edinburgh Fundraiser sponsors
