Employment Law

Louisiana Governor Signs Bill To Legalize Smokable Medical Marijuana

Now that medical marijuana is available to patients in Louisiana, employers in the industrial sector face a potential balancing act between workplace safety and workers' disability rights.

You may also face the challenge of differentiating between the medically approved smokable marijuana being used and recreational marijuana that by law is illegal.

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law prohibiting discrimination against those with disabilities on the job and in the public sphere. Louisiana disability law does not carve out medical marijuana use as protected at this time.

Employers should stick to and apply current Drug & Alcohol Policies. If you do not have a drug and alcohol policy inline or a random drug testing policy, you may want to reconsider due to workplace safety.

January Awareness and Holidays to Celebrate

Dr. Martian Luther King Day

As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day, many employers have this day off as a remembrance and celebration for what he provided for this country. Make sure to include this in your diversity and inclusion, highlighting that we honor him as a civil rights leader who paved the way and advocated for nonviolent resistance against racial segregation.

Human Trafficking Prevention Awareness

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Companies can combat modern-day slavery by creating an environment hostile to human traffickers. That means educating employees about how to recognize trafficking and how to properly intervene in suspected cases. Check out this article from SHRM to learn more on how workplaces can help fight human trafficking.
