Note From The Superintendent

Dear Southern Boone School District Family,

As 2021 draws to a close, it is important to take time to say "thank you" to the parents that trust the school district with their children every single day, and a sincere appreciation to the entire community for their support of the school district. Your generosity this past year to our students and staff has been incredible. We appreciate everything you have done.

Like most of you, this is the time of year when we look back on our accomplishments and challenges. Like all school districts, we have faced a variety of obstacles over the past 12 months, however, we've continued to navigate through the challenges, all while providing the best education possible to our students. We can't say enough about the teachers and staff, and their hard work, passion and dedication they provide to our students, the school district and the community. They continue to persevere through adversity. Our school board and administration are very proud of the work from our teachers and staff.

May the warmth of the holiday season bless you and your family. I pray that everyone will have a safe and healthy winter break. Thank you for your support of our students and staff.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Respectfully,

Christopher Felmlee
Superintendent of Schools

Joyce Arnsmeyer Gillespie Inducted
Into Missouri Sports Hall of Fame

A former Southern Boone girls basketball prolific scorer has been inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Southern Boone’s Joyce Arnsmeyer Gillespie was part of the Class of 2021, which was recognized during the organization’s annual Basketball Luncheon on Tuesday, December 14th in Springfield, MO.

“We are delighted to welcome our inductees who not only made the game great in our state, but certainly inspired many,” said Jerald Andrews, CEO and Executive Director of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. “And we truly appreciate all of the businesses and individuals who helped support all of our honorees.”

Southern Boone High School has long fielded competitive basketball teams, and one of its early stars was Joyce Arnsmeyer Gillespie. Playing long before the addition of the 3-point line, she scored 3,038 points between 1963 and 1966. That total stood as the state’s best until 1991, and still ranks No. 9 all-time. She still holds the state record for career scoring average (33.73 ppg).

In the 1966 season alone, she scored 994 points, which held up as the state record until 1990 and remains sixth-best all-time. Additionally, Gillespie converted 1,207 field goals, 624 free throws and attempted 991 free throws. In order, those were state records until 2011, 2002 and 1969 – with her free throws now No. 4 in state history. She had a 74-point game in January 1964, as well as two 61-point games, scored more than 50 points eight times and scored more than 40 points twice.

She later played AAU basketball for the Raytown Piperettes, whose 1967 team placed third in the national tournament. She went on to work for the University of Missouri for 30 years and retired in 2007 from the University Health Care Diabetes and Endocrinology Center.

The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2021 also included:
  • William Fontleroy - standout guard on Missouri State’s 1999 Sweet Sixteen Team
  • Jimmy Wright - member of basketball table crews for MSU, the Blue & Gold Tournament and the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions
  • Denny Hunt - longtime coach and Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Executive Director
  • The Walnut Grove Girls Basketball Program
  • Evangel University’s 2002 Men’s National Championship Team
  • The Lockwood Tigers Boys Final Four Teams of 1993-1996
  • The undefeated Drexel High School Girls 1996 State Championship Team
Additionally, recently retired Evangel men’s basketball coach Steve Jenkins received the Pinnacle Award for his lifetime of service.

The Southern Boone community is invited to honor and celebrate Joyce Arnsmeyer Gillespie’s induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame during a reception on Wednesday, December 29th at 6:30PM at the Ashland Optimist Building. The event is being hosted by the Southern Boone Senior Class of 66.

Middle School Construction Bond Update

Work continues on the middle school construction project. With the new addition that is being build, the iron workers have installed roughly 90% the steel columns, beams, roof bar joist and metal decking. The metal stud framers are making excellent progress installing walls and exterior wall sheathing.

In the middle school's north building, roofers are on track to finish work on the north building this week. Once that work is complete, the roofers will transition to the south building to start reroofing, and possibly start working on the roof of new addition. Over the holiday break, contractors will be working on installing the casework/cabinets in the classrooms and install the remaining ceramic wall tile in the east hallway. In the middle school's south building, Prost Builders are projected to pour back the concrete slab in the existing classroom with the floor settlement issue.

Voters in the Southern Boone School District approved the $7.7 million bond issue last April for the middle school construction project. The project will connect the two buildings with the new addition, which consists of a new main office, science labs, library and vocational area. The project also includes converting the current office and library into additional classrooms, and other much needed improvements to the middle school.

Donate To The Southern Boone Learning Garden

CoMoGives is still underway and will end on December 31st. The Southern Boone Learning Garden has a goal of raising $5,000 in donations. CoMoGives is an annual online fundraiser that supports 148 high-impact nonprofits in Columbia and throughout Mid-Missouri. Donors can make a single donation to one of the organizations through the end of the year. All money raised, minus credit card fees, goes directly to the participating nonprofits groups.

The Learning Garden supports the Southern Boone School District to create curriculum and provide outdoor education for over 950 students in the on-site garden and outdoor classroom. Programs include school-day garden classes for all students in pre-K through 5th grade, activities with middle and high school special education students, and after-school garden and cooking clubs.

We serve a growing rural community by providing hands-on, outdoor learning to spark excitement about nature and gardening while meeting core curriculum standards. For many students, the Learning Garden is their first exposure to gardening and seeing where food comes from. If a child grows it, they’ll eat it!
