A New Year Message
Happy New Year!  Across the world, people said goodbye to 2021 and welcomed in 2022 with a variety of traditions. Regardless of how you celebrated the transition to the new year – with family, with friends, with a good book or movie – hopefully it provided an opportunity to reflect on the past year and imagine new possibilities and new paths in the coming year.  This excerpt from a new year poem by Amanda Gorman beautifully describes this opportunity.
Tethered by this year of yearning,
We are learning
That though we weren't ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
We steadily vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.

- Amanda Gorman
Over the past couple of years, we have certainly experienced situations that we may not have been ready for, but these situations readied us to move forward. In our personal lives, as well as in the work we do as a network, may we continue to ‘pave a way forward’ as we strive to make our communities a place where all belong.

SIRS Tip
SIRS: It’s Alive

At the Center for START Services (CSS) we don’t just talk about being evidence informed, we practice it. When we learn new or improved ways of doing something, we make changes in our work. The same is true for the SIRS database. SIRS is a growing, changing entity that reflects the work being done within START programs across the country. This can mean adding new fields to reflect our commitment to strength-based approaches or to explore access to technology during a global pandemic when telehealth services became essential.

SIRS is having a growth spurt, and, in the next few months, CSS will introduce some helpful revisions to the database. These changes support the mission and practices of START and will enhance and simplify the way that we capture the work accomplished by START staff in the field. The changes also reflect our network’s values of ongoing learning, growth, and evidence-informed practice.

Many of the changes that we will implement reflect suggestions and feedback from those of you who use SIRS every day. We listen when you share your ideas, and we use the data to further inform changes.

While change may take us out temporarily take us out of our comfort zone, it is an opportunity to improve the way we do our work. CSS is committed to providing training, technical support, and feedback along the way to ensure that every member of the network has the skills and tools needed to succeed.
