"WSCC DECEMBER NEWSLETTER" written in front of a photo of a snowy landscape

A hearty welcome to a belated winter, all! Let’s hope the snow sticks for those sticking around to enjoy it and maybe even welcoming family and friends to share it with. Safe travels to those who have to travel through it.

Year’s end is a good time for reflection, and 2021 has been quite a year. This was the year that we found ourselves facing the possibility that the shifts in our lives brought by the global pandemic may be around for a long time. WSCC has tried to bend as the willow in wind and continue our work as best we can in changing and challenging conditions. Looking back, I want to thank everyone for the continued support and patience as we adjust to more cautious and remote ways of gathering. We are fortunate that much of our work takes place outside, where many of us have developed a sense of safety and solitude that may have become more focused this year.

This year has also been a reminder that the work we do to create that sense of safety and solitude for others, now and in the future, is essential. We’ve built bridges literal and figurative, strengthened our Keep the North Fork Fruitful Campaign, advocated against new drilling and monitored current oil and gas development, and found ways to gather together - be it at a Mike’s Hikes outing or most recently at Mountainfilm.

None of this happens without all of you. Thank you. Thank you for looking out for us and each other.

With appreciation,

Tanya Henderson
Executive Director

Please note our office will be closed 12/24/21 through 1/2/22; WSCC staff will be taking a break from communications during this time.

UPCOMING EVENTS
We are excited to share that we are teaming up with The Learning Council and Delta Libraries this winter for a speaker series! The series will feature one speaker a month on a variety of environmental topics at three different libraries in Delta County. The series will be available to watch on Zoom for those who are unable to attend in person.

Our first speaker is coming up on January 27th at the Delta Library Community Room. Emily Latta, BLM Biologist, will discuss bat conservation in Colorado. Bring your curiosity and your questions!

We are always looking for more voices on WSCC's Volunteer Committees! Our committees are critical to the success of our programs, organization, community, and environment. We meet once a month - email info@theconservationcenter.org for more information.

In November, our volunteers:

  • Began relocating the Labyrinth at the Paonia River Park to a new site (special thanks to NFSIS students for the help!)
  • Collected and scattered native seed at a Habitat Replacement site for Minnesota Creek Ditch
  • Helped us put out our annual appeal
Thank you everyone!

River Park Updates

There’s been a lot going on at the River Park this month! We are putting into place the final components of the Master Plan we created in 2013. Two weeks ago, construction began on the outdoor classroom space near Minnesota Creek...read more

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) is continuing with their rule changes to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of Colorado's communities during the oil and gas drilling process. Currently, the Commission is starting a process to determine what bonding (think security deposit) oil and gas companies need to provide up front so that taxpayers aren't left on the hook for the clean-up. WSCC thinks that oil and gas companies should clean up after themselves, and provide the necessary bonds up front so that taxpayers aren’t stuck with the bill. Sign our petition today to let the commissioners know you agree!

Graphic with the words "Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre & Gunnison National Forest Draft Plan"

The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest has now completed its draft plan. Thanks to all who commented before the November 26th deadline. The Forest Service has said it received over 8,000 comments, with over 1,000 of those as substantive comments warranting additional review and response by the planning team. We know many of you spent time and energy interpreting different parts of the plan and writing comments, and we thank you for your hard work! To view WSCC’s comments on the plan and stay tuned for next steps, check our our website below.
