Resumen ejecutivo:

La actividad minera de pequeña y mediana minería de tipo aluvional es la practicada mayormente en la región, teniendo una estrecha relación con los cuerpos de agua. Las cuencas de los ríos Caroní, Caura, Aro, Cuyuní y Ventuari son las más afectadas por la actividad minera en la Guayana/Amazonía Venezolana.

En atención a esta preocupación y teniendo en cuenta la dificultad logística de campo, se diseñó un muestreo indirecto para el análisis de la concentración de mercurio total en la cuenca baja de los ríos Caura y Aro, así como en áreas de explotación minera de la cuenca alta del Caroní. En dichas localidades, se tomaron muestras de agua, sedimentos, peces y cabello, de acuerdo con la facilidad de acceso, entendiendo que la contaminación por Hg no se queda en el sitio de la actividad, sino que tiene influencia aguas abajo, pudiéndose bioacumular en peces y humanos.

Se detectó que existe presencia de mercurio en la población Pemón evaluada, sobrepasando la mayoría de los casos el límite establecido por la OMS. Sin embargo, hay mucha variabilidad de las concentraciones entre la población muestreada y las localidades evaluadas. Existe vulnerabilidad en las poblaciones de niños, ya que se evidenciaron las mayores concentraciones en muestras de menores de 18 años que no trabajan en minas. Estos resultados señalan que hay una fuente de entrada del mercurio a las comunidades, que podría estar asociado a la actividad minera.

Sin embargo, se requiere tener más información para poder respaldar dichas afirmaciones; en ese sentido es necesario el diseño de un muestreo sistemático río abajo, partiendo de las áreas de actividad minera, para poder caracterizar la dinámica hidrobiológica y estimar hasta dónde llega el efecto de contaminación producido por el uso de mercurio en la minería del oro. English translation of the executive summary:

Mining activity of small and medium alluvial type mining is practiced mostly in the region, in close proximity to bodies of water. The Caroní, Caura, Aro, Cuyuní and Ventuari river basins are the most affected by mining activity in Guayana/Venezuelan Amazon.

In response to this concern and taking into account the logistical difficulty of the field, an indirect sampling was designed to analyze the concentration of total mercury in the lower basin of the Caura and Aro rivers, as well as in mining areas of the upper basin of the Caroní River. In these localities, samples of water, sediments, fish and hair were taken according to the ease of access, understanding that mercury contamination does not remain at the site of the activity, but has an influence downstream, because it bioaccumulates in fish and humans.

The presence of mercury was detected in the Pemón population that was evaluated and was found that in most cases it exceeded the limit established by the WHO. However, there is a lot of variability in concentrations between the sampled population and the evaluated localities. There is vulnerability in the populations of children, since the highest concentrations were evidenced in samples of children under 18 years of age who do not work in mines. 

These results indicate that there is a source of entry of mercury in the communities, which could be associated with mining activity. However, more information is required to support such claims. In this sense, it is necessary to design a systematic downstream sampling, starting from the areas of mining activity, in order to characterize the hydrobiological dynamics and estimate the extent of the effect of contamination produced by the use of mercury in gold mining. El mercurio también baña los territorios indígenas en la Gran Sabana. 35% de la muestra de un estudio –liderado por SOS Orinoco— en el sur de Bolívar, excede el límite de seguridad de 2 microgramos por gramo (µg/g) en cabello, establecido por la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Los resultados muestran la extensión de la huella tóxica que deja la minería en la Amazonía venezolana, que se traduce en contaminación de suelos y aguas y afecciones a la salud de la población.

Mercury's Toxic Footprint has reached La Gran Sabana

Mercury also bathes indigenous territories in the Gran Sabana. 35% of the sample in a study - led by SOS Orinoco - in southern Bolívar, exceeds the safety limit of 2 micrograms per gram (µg / g) in hair, established by the World Health Organization. The results show the extent of the toxic footprint left by mining in the Venezuelan Amazon, which translates into soil and water contamination and health problems for the population.
