16 Days of Activism: Awareness to Accountability

Building on the momentum from GIRWL’s 2020 #16Days event, this highly interactive conference will share outcomes from GIRWL’s Report, Refugee Women: Unpacking Gender-based Violence, and seek expert insight on how to collaboratively move from awareness to action and accountability in preventing and responding to Gender-Based Violence enabling women as agents of change, and the role of women-led initiatives on gender, climate and security.

AFGHANISTAN
 

This report summarizes our panel discussion on the situation situation in Afghanistan, how the international community can negotiate with the Taliban to provide assistance to Afghans, migration pathways or other options available to those fleeing Afghanistan, and The Global Compact on Refugees.  Read 

 

WRMC Member and Canadian Independent Senator Ratna Omidvar delivered opening remarks at the panel discussion “Solidarity with Afghan Women: A Policy Perspective” to discuss the ways Canada can better support Afghan women.  Read 

MIGRATION TASK FORCE
 

In a final Fact Sheet, the leaders of Canada, the US, and Mexico recognized “the complex factors that have driven an increase in irregular migration through the hemisphere, and acknowledged that they require a coordinated regional response with respect for law, rooted in solidarity with migrants and among States, prioritizing orderly, safe, and regular migration.”  Read 

 

This report considers alternative pathways for migration from Northern Central America. Considering why so many Central Americans are setting off on dangerous irregular migration journeys, the report finds that there is virtually no way that they can move through regular, legal, safe channels.  Read 

OTHER WRMC NEWS
 

Independent Canadian Senator and WRMC member Ratna Omidvar has re-tabled the Frozen Assets Repurposing Act in the Canadian Senate. The Act advances the WRMC’s call for governments of countries in which regimes have deposited financial assets to develop appropriate legal measures to confiscate and repurpose such assets for the benefit of the people in the country of origin, including forcibly displaced persons.  Read
