The Official Newsletter of the West Ridge Community Organization

December 2021

GREETINGS

You haven’t received a WRCO newsletter lately since our social media person who produced the newsletter had to discontinue her work for WRCO.  She has taken on more responsibilities at her job and just didn’t have the time.

As the year is ending we wanted to update you on the projects with which WRCO is involved.  In the past year or so despite the pandemic we have continued our efforts in the following areas.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

In conjunction with the West Ridge Chamber, we gathered over 1,500 signatures on a petition to get a Trader Joe’s in our community.  We gained support from Ald. Silverstein, State Rep. Denyse Stoneback, State Senator Ram Villivalam and Congressperson Jan Schakowsky.  We submitted an application to Trader Joe’s and due to the level of community and political support West Ridge will be included in next year’s real estate strategy planning.  Know that we intend to follow up on this.

WRCO supports The Wild Onion Market Grocery Store, a community-owned food co-op that is looking for a site in West Ridge.  Households and businesses have joined together to create a place for sustainable and local foods.  The co-op needs your voice, your input, and your support.  You can find more information here http://www.wildonionmarket.com  and consider becoming an owner as this will be your store.

We are on the steering committee for the Western Avenue Corridor Study, participated in a focus group and have promoted the online community meetings.  The study will result in a long-term vision with a road map for future projects.  Areas covered include bike and pedestrian safety, land use and development, transportation, and sustainability.

WEST RIDGE ARTISTS

WRCO has brought together West Ridge artists to build support for the arts and to hold art events in different venues around the community.  During the pandemic we sponsored COVID Creations so residents could share their creations.  You can view their submissions at www.westridgeartists.org.  We set up a West Ridge Artists YouTube channel where you can see videos by local artists and be sure to click on the playlists.  Watch videos produced by Mirko Popadic on Saving the High Ridge Y, see artwork by Ray Noesen and Kat Hardy, and listen to music by Rich Trumbo.
