Our Past Year

Winter 2021

Reflecting on the past year, it’s clear journalism faces threats and challenges, and yet it has never been so important. Reporters are the frontline witnesses to crumbling democracies, and they have kept the world informed about the threats of the pandemic. For our troubles, our colleagues are labelled “fake news,” harassed online, imprisoned for doing their jobs. At the same time, two courageous reporters were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize – a clear message that journalism matters.

As a supporter of the Global Reporting Centre, you know journalism matters. From investigating corruption, to exposing weaknesses in supply chains, to in-depth collaborative reporting and giving voice to marginalized communities, we have embraced our motto: Global Journalism, Done Differently.

To continue the work that we love doing, we’re asking you to consider making a tax-deductible donation: https://globalreportingcentre.org/donate/

Thank you for your continued support.

Our End-of-the-Year Roundup!

Ever wondered how the rich move assets offshore? Thanks to a leak of 350,000 documents from a trust company on the island of Jersey, we found out. In particular, we explored a client-facing memo obtained in a big offshore data leak outlining the 11 ways that the ultra-rich can hide their money. Check out our investigation here, produced in partnership with European Investigative Collaborations and Mother Jones, to hone up on the financial principles at play.

While major clothing companies received hundreds of millions of dollars in COVID-19 public relief funds, global garment workers slid into extreme poverty and indebtedness, paving the way for exploitation, abuse and forced labour conditions. These investigative stories were the product of a joint academic-journalist collaboration supported by the GRC, where the Toronto Star/Global Reporting Centre reported in partnership with researchers from the University of Sheffield.

A collaboration with NBC News, the GRC contributed research and reporting into investigating the rise of a new plastic factory in Appalachia. How does a region balance its hope for jobs with the creation of a product most agree the world needs less of? What role does policy play in promises that may not be fulfilled? Read the NBC investigation here, and peruse a fun interactive explainer on plastics on the GRC’s website

A look at alternative teaching methods and reimagined school systems in four countries is the Global Reporting Programme’s 2020 class’ magnum opus. Travel to Kenya, Norway, Nepal and Pakistan in stunning photo essays that ask and answer the question: how can education evolve to prepare students for the modern world, but also shore up their roots with the past?

Empowerment journalism in its true sense: a documentary series with stories told, directed and produced in partnership with Indigenous people in Yellowknife, offering perspective on how they navigated, confronted, and healed from alcohol use, addiction and trauma. In partnership with PBS Newshour.

Happy Holidays!

Wishing you happy holidays from some of the staff members of the GRC, including our honorary canine, Nala!

In times of ongoing attacks on press freedoms, the GRC has continued to do nuanced, collaborative, and boundary-pushing journalism. With your donations, you could support more projects like these for the upcoming year. Please consider giving to the GRC today.
