THE MANAGEMENT MONTHLY

HOLIDAY EDITION

A PUBLICATION FROM THE SAN ANTONIO CHAPTER OF THE

MEDICAL GROUP MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

VOLUME 2, NUMBER 11

Fairwell from Tom Tidwell

During the summer of 1992, I was anticipating my retirement from the US Air Force on December 1, 1992, and considering what career path I wanted to follow after completing 20 years of service.  I could tell you what I did not want to do, but I had not decided on what I would do once leaving the US Air Force.

At the time, I was stationed at Randolph AFB working in the USAF Recruiting Service Advertising Section.  Tim Talbert, my supervisor, talked with me about a physician friend who was looking for a person to manage his new emergency medicine group.  I met with Jim Potyka, M.D. and he hired me to be the Director of Professional Services… our relationship lasted 15 years until he sold the group and then I worked with Tim Taylor, M.D. for another 5 years when I retired from the group.  I worked an additional 10 years as a medical practice manager in various medical practices and eventually became a medical practice management consultant.

On December 31, 2021, I am retiring for the final time.  I contemplated working a few more years, but my wife Nancy’s health issues are my priority.

During my nearly 30 years of medical practice management, I have enjoyed participating in San Antonio MGMA and Texas MGMA events.  I served on the SAMGMA Board of Directors twice and developed friendships that remain solid today.  I served on the Texas MGMA Board of Directors the past 3 ½ years, first as a Regional Director for Central Texas, and most recently as the Secretary Treasurer; where I have met many great people throughout the state who have volunteered to serve Texas MGMA.  I do not plan to go away and hope to participate in San Antonio MGMA and Texas MGMA events as often as I can.

I would like to encourage you to become more active in SAMGMA and Texas MGMA by volunteering to serve on a committee or the Board of Directors.  Encourage your colleagues who are not members of SAMGMA and Texas MGMA to attend at least one event to see if we are the right professional association for them.  We have a great professional association… take advantage of the educational opportunities and other social events.

In closing, I think about one of my favorite phrases that I used to say to my Mom when she asked me to do something… “I was only passing through”.  Joking aside, I have had a great journey working.
