Fee guidelines issued for academic tutoring

Some local governments have issued guidelines on the fees that companies can charge for academic tutoring services when they become non-profits by the end of this year. Zhejiang Province’s Jinhua City said that the cost of a 45-minute class with less than 10 students should be 50 RMB (10 AUD) per student, 40 RMB (8 AUD) if the class is for 10-35 students and 30 RMB (6 AUD) for classes with more than 35 students. Hainan Province sets prices ranging from 5 to 25 yuan per class per student, depending on enrolment numbers.
 

85% of China's population to speak Mandarin by 2025

The number of Chinese people who speak Putonghua, or Mandarin Chinese, will be increased to 85 percent of China's population by 2025 according to a recent circular released by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE). The number of people who spoke Mandarin in 2020 was 80.72% and 53.06% in 2000.
 

More Chinese college graduates prefer jobs in the public sector(CHN)

This year, more than 2 million people registered for the national public service exam in China making it more competitive than previous years. The chance of securing a job from taking this test has decreased from one in 16 in 2003 to one in 46 in 2022.
 

China to offer more policy supports in AI education

China will offer more policy supports in artificial intelligence education and push for deep integration of AI in education and teaching, China’s Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng said on 7 December at the UNESCO International Forum on AI and Education.

High school students in Beijing will receive free online tutoring from 2022 (CHN)

According to Beijing’s education authority, the city will offer free online tutoring to more than 330,000 high school students from 646 schools across Beijing from 1 January 2022. The subjects offered will be the nine academic subjects and the time of offering will be between 6 to 9 pm from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays and summer/winter holidays).
 

Beijing improves PE assessments, online tutoring

Beijing ‘s education authority spokesperson has recently said that the city will carry out a series of measures to improve students’ physical health by adding progress assessment of Physical Education (PE) classes and allow students to choose four sports from a list of 22 for their final test.

The University of Sydney and Zhejiang University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a joint lab on sustainable environment.
 

Harrow Haikou requires students to sit senior high-school entrance exam, raising concern over stricter supervision over international schools (CHN)

Harrow Innovation Leadership Academy, an international school in Hainan Province has recently notified parents that students will need to sit the Senior High-school entrance exam held by the Chinese Government in order to proceed to senior high-school study level, as required by local education authority. The test is usually taken by students studying in the Chinese education system and not required by those who plan to enroll in international senior high-school programmes. A staff member from the city’s education office responded to media saying that the test is an important part of compulsory education, and therefore should “in theory” be sat by all students.

ACU is ready to push into online education with new suite of courses

The Australian Catholic University is moving on from its traditional focus on face-to-face education to launch its first major push into ­online. The university will launch eight new online courses in April next year, including a bachelor of commerce degree, and other postgraduate courses mainly in health and education, ACU’s areas of strength.

UK issues record number of study visas in 2021

The UK home office granted a record 428,428 sponsored study visas in the year up to September 2021, a 143% rise on the previous year and a 55% increase on pre-COVID levels. The figure – including both main applicants and their dependants – broke the previous record set at the end of June 2010 when 307,394 visas were granted.


Will Chinese students continue to want to study abroad?

Some would argue that the allure of studying abroad, particularly in the US and UK, is beginning to wane for Chinese citizens - Chinese student applications decreased by 18% for the US and 21% for the UK compared to the previous year. Despite these shifts, there continues to be various reasons for Chinese students to continue pursue their degrees abroad, including a recent study from the British Council that found almost a 10th of parents of school-age children said that they definitely wanted their child to study abroad, with more than half saying that they were at least seriously considering this option.

 
US: Peak bodies call for national international education strategy

Momentum is building in the US toward the development of a national strategy for international education. Peak bodies for US higher education are increasing their calls for the federal government to lead a strategy process, with an emphasis on more active and diversified recruitment and an expansion of US student participation in study abroad. The move follows a July 2021 joint statement from the US Departments of Education and State that staked out a renewed focus on international education on the part of the US federal government.
