Hi folks, What. A. Year.

No matter where you find yourself on the spectrum of loving or hating 2021, inevitably we'll all soon be seeing a lot more 2's when writing the date. Like most of you, over at ContinualAI we have been busy these last few months of 2021, and we're quite excited to share a few of the projects and announcements we have been working on. So before you cozy up for the winter season, please give this newsletter a quick read to stay up to date with some of what we're working on.

Either profound, nonsense, or just luck, the quote from the recent Oxford Union AI debate, from an AI itself. Read more about it here

We want to hear from you, whether you want to get more involved, have an idea for a new project we could start, or want to offer us feedback about what we can do better. Please feel free to message us on slack or at contact@continualai.org with your note.

We're happy to share our work towards accelerating research surrounding continual learning AI: a necessary step in the direction of strong, general AI. Passionate about our mission? Join us on slack if you haven't already and feel free to donate if you are passionate about this goal.

Join us for Avalanche Dev Day!
The "Avalanche Dev Day" is an annual event organized by ContinualAI to discuss relevant ideas related to the development of Avalanche: the end-to-end reference library for Continual Learning. For more information, visit our website here

The event will take place in a mixed in-person / virtual modality from 16:00 - 18:00 CET. You'll be able to follow the event online using this MS Teams link.

We recently developed a Continual Learning Course! We are proud to offer the first official open-access course on Continual Learning. Anyone from around the world can join the class and learn about this fascinating topic, completely for free! Head over to the website to view all of the lecture videos and course content. Also, recorded lectures will be uploaded on the ContinualAI Youtube account (and remain available on Youtube for async views). Please share these resources widely and/or let us know what you think!

Continual Learning Seminars

We have revamped our popular seminar series! Check out our youtube channel for all of the recorded content, including:  Stay tuned for updates about the next season of our series!
Jobs, and other useful pointers

* Check out the Conference on Lifelong Learning Agents - CoLLA 2022

* Numenta is growing, and looking to hire an experienced research manager to help manage a portion of their research team. A great opportunity to participate in research that is at the intersection of neuroscience and machine learning. Continual learning is a big focus area! Please see this page for details and application instructions.

* Samsung Research America AI center (Mountain View) is looking for research interns (Spring, Summer 2022)
The research topic will be in the following areas:
  • Continual learning on edge devices
  • DNN model compression
  • Efficient DNN model/architecture design
  • Acoustic speech recognition
(Requirement: US Ph.D. student)
If interested, please email: yenchang.hsu@samsung.com

* 3 postdocs wanted to model the universe and automate science!
The deadline is January 10, 2022. Both the start date and location are flexible.

We have been blown away by the overwhelmingly positive response we have received about Avalanche, and look forward to further developing the project. We aim to push continual learning to the next level, providing a shared, open source, and collaborative library for fast prototyping, training, and reproducible evaluation of continual learning algorithms.

We encourage everyone to find out more about the project, try out the new codebase, and read up on how it can catalyze your research. Share any issue you may run into, drop us a star on Github if you like it, or even help contribute
