David's Time in the Village

David returned to us this week, on Tuesday, after 18 days in a remote village.  The translation team was very productive during this time and they were privileged to involve 67 Kaluli readers on the recording.  They recorded nearly 25% of the entire New Testament during the stay.  David's favorite parts of the trip, include:

  1. Learning the greeting in the local language.  Good Day = Disi Nafa, and Good Afternoon = Galu Nafa
  2. Meeting all volunteers who read their part of the dramatized recording project.
  3. Seeing a spotted cuscus.
  4. Walking through a Kaluli Long House.
  5. Walking 3 hours to a nearby village for a Church Opening Ceremony.
  6. Talking on the HF Radio, our only available mode of communication. Roger. Copy. Over.
(Photo Above) We put up a cross in front of the Translator's house.  One group walked 8 hours to come read.  We hoped that as they arrive they would come with a heart of worship. The flat area in front of the cross is the grass runway which we flew in on.
This is a spotted cuscus.  Perfectly harmless.  The kids would like one as a pet.
The Kaluli people live on the side of an extinct volcano, Mount Bosavi.  BBC made a documentary about this unexplored volcano.  Here it is.
Kaluli villages are known for their interesting Long House design.  This is a small one, they used to be much larger and house many families at once.
Some people composed original gospel songs in the Kaluli language.
The Opening Ceremony for a local church was celebrated by slaughtering 4 pigs and sharing a large meal with everyone who attended.  They butchered the pigs on a stick platform to keep the dogs (bottom right) from enjoying the meal too.
Andy and I were served very large amounts of food, multiple times at the celebration.  Usually sweet potato, greens, rice, noodles and fresh pork.  It was delicious.
The women of the church prepared meals for the 57 groups in attendance.  It was served community-style; everyone in a group eating from the same bowl/basket.
Andy works closely with the Kaluli Translation team.
Papua New Guinea landscape has A LOT to do with the fact that there are nearly 900 different languages.  For A LONG time the language groups had little interaction with each other.

On the day that David returned, Benaiah broke his arm at school.  Praise God that it is only a "green stick fracture".
  • Praise God that Dave returned safely, and a lot of work was completed.
  • Praise God that the Kaluli people interacted with God's word in their heart-language as they read and recorded it.
  • Praise God that Covid numbers in PNG are decreasing significantly.
  • Please pray for the kids as they approach the last week of school.  Lu has several projects due, and there are many festive activities planned.
  • Please pray for the Kaluli Expat Translators, Andy and Sylvia Grosh, as they prepare to publish the New Testament along with the Audio version, after working for over 30.
  • Please pray that we can get rest over the Christmas season, as kids will be home from school and David will be able to take some time off.
  • Please pray for Benaiah's arm to heal up quickly.
