Newsletter - December 2021
Welcome to our latest newsletter which is brought to you at the start of the Festive Season. It has certainly been a very strange and challenging year but we are hoping to have a Face to Face meeting in January with an inspirational guest speaker.  However, we recognise that some of you may not feel quite ready to attend Face to Face meetings and we are therefore planning on making it available virtually via Zoom.  More details of this event can be found below.

We have recently received the disappointing news that we will be losing one of our much valued committee members. The committee would like to invite new members to join us to bring new and fresh ideas in order to help guide your Support Group.  We welcome people from all parts of the community and you don’t need to have diabetes to become a member.  If you are interested in joining us and would like a chat with our chairman about what this would involve please send an email to diabetesuk.basingstokegroup@gmail.com with your contact details.

To get you into the holiday mood we have a fun festive quiz for you to try with your families and friends.  Answers are at the end of this newsletter.

Please get this date in your diaries – Wednesday 19th January 2022 at 7:30pm

Old friend visits us to start our season of talks

We are pleased to announce that Peter Davies, who gave us one of our first talks in the early months of our formation in 2016, is coming back again.

Peter's last talk was highly entertaining as he described his epic trip to Tanzania and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, including low oxygen levels and Insulin freezing whilst climbing.  This time Peter will cover briefly his trip climbing Kilimanjaro but mainly focus on his amazing trip to Peru and his time walking in the Andes.

As Peter is such a good speaker, we have decided to move the venue to Central Studio at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke.  This is a larger venue and will seat 35 people with adequate social distancing.

Please don't be disappointed and miss out on this fantastic talk given by this extraordinary Type 1 diabetic explorer.  You will have to book your place in advance so please email diabetesuk.basingstokegroup@gmail.com to reserve your seat or to request the Zoom details.

Venue  -   Central Studio, Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke. RG21 3HF.
Date    -    Wednesday 19th January 2022
Time    -    7.30pm.

Please arrive in good time to take your place.

Coffee, Tea and biscuits will be available.

Feel more in control of your diabetes
The person with the biggest impact on your diabetes is you; what you do, every day. However, we know that managing diabetes is not always easy.  Work, family, caring responsibilities and life can all get in the way of looking after ourselves, Southern Health have put together some information to help you (see here).
The information is split into four themes: food, activity, getting enough sleep and reducing stress, where possible.  Tackling these areas of your life will help you manage your diabetes, by reducing your blood glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol.  This will also help you feel better.

Type 1 education courses
These courses are provided by the hospital.  If you already see the team there you can ask for T1 education updates, otherwise ask your GP/PN to refer you to the hospital for this.

'Bertie on line'  is also a very good resource for T1 and is accessible and free. https://www.bertieonline.org.uk

One Million Step Challenge

Further to our article in the last newsletter, our team have completed the One Million Step Challenge.  We also finally managed to get together to undertake a walk, starting out from Ellisfield we headed towards Cliddesden on to Farleigh Wallop and back to Ellisfield,  The weather was kind and we enjoyed spectacular views.

All four members agreed that they had benefitted from undertaking and achieving the challenge, we actually managed 4,775,758 steps between us.  More importantly we raised £1,000 for DiABETES UK and we would like to thank all those who supported us.
