Advent is a season of holy preparation, in which we actively wait for the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. During the four weeks leading up to Christmas, we prepare our hearts for the season by reflecting on the prophecies that hoped for the birth of the messiah, and the gospel stories of Christ’s birth. Traditionally, each week focuses on one of the different gifts that Jesus’ arrival brought us: hope, peace, joy, and love.
But during this busy season of the academic year, I imagine that you might be overwhelmed by the preparation for other things - final exams, projects, and papers. Finding time to prepare for Christ may seem like an overwhelming task.
In that spirit, I’d like to offer 5 ideas for how you might celebrate Advent this year (each of which takes 10 minutes or less)
-
Pick up an Advent Wreath set from LCM. Light the candles each day as you eat a quick meal and read the short devotional cards for each week.
-
Listen to LCM’s Advent Playlist on Spotify.
-
Use a nativity-related image for your phone lock screen or computer desktop. Pause to remember Christ when you see the nativity image.
-
Read the Christmas story from the Bible (Luke 2:1-20)
-
Take a walk outdoors after dark and reflect on what Christ bringing light into the darkness of the world means to you.
Wishing you the hope, peace, love, and joy of Christ in this Advent season. May God bless you as you prepare for the end of the semester, and for Christmas.
