Dear colleagues,
Welcome to the eleventh edition of the Global WASH Cluster’s (GWC) 2021 Monthly Newsletter! We are pleased to share in this issue upcoming news on the new Market-based Programming for WASH In Emergencies Distance Learning Course, key operational coordination updates and fresh news from partner organizations including the German WASH Network, UNICEF, Sanitation and Water for All, IMMAP and others.
In addition, key documents from national humanitarian WASH coordination platforms are also featured in the operational update section. Highlights this month from countries feature the Yemen WASH Cluster - Humanitarian Dashboard and the South Sudan WASH Cluster Core Pipeline and Overall Figures Dashboard.
The launch of the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) 2022 on 2 nd December highlighted that 274 million people will need humanitarian assistance and protection. This number is a significant increase from 235 million people a year ago, which was already the highest figure in decades. Whilst the WASH components of Humanitarian Appeals remain only 18% funded in 2021 (link), the coming year will require even more investments in WASH humanitarian responses as well as integrated public health responses. It will be essential for our community to step up in coordinating our efforts across crises and it will also require governments and donors to support and fund humanitarian appeals.
2021 has shown the incredible work and commitment of national National Humanitarian WASH Coordination Platforms and partners around the world. We at CAST wanted to take a moment to say how thankful and impressed we are for all of your continuous efforts towards effective coordination. We would like to extend our appreciation to all partners and audiences who read us on the job in sometimes high volatile environments, in fragile contexts, or simply from their homes around the world.
We hope to continue and strengthen our support for humanitarian WASH coordination and achieve this together with the launch of the GWC’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025.
We wish you all, and your families, a happy end-of-year period and look forward to our collaborations in 2022!

Market-Based Programming for WASH in Emergencies - Distance Learning Course
|
|
|
|
|
 We are pleased to inform you that, with the support of UNICEF, Save the Children, and the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, the GWC has developed the Market Based Programming for WASH in Emergencies distance learning course.
This training is part of the GWC training pathways for WASH Cluster partners programme staff and WASH cluster coordination to ensure effective WASH coordination and programming in humanitarian contexts.
The training aims at building the capacity of WASH practitioners, cluster and sector coordinators, and cash & market experts to apply market-based approaches to achieve WASH outcomes. This distance learning course would include interactive webinar sessions, self-directed learning in AGORA platform, use of case studies, peer-to-peer review, and knowledge tests. It will be conducted entirely in English, but we hope that soon after this first cohort it will be available in other languages as well.
This course duration is 4 weeks, with dedication within 2 to 3 hours, 5 days a week, for the whole duration of the training. The course will start on 17th January 2022.

The Global WASH Cluster provides Operational Support for coordination platforms in humanitarian emergencies through deployments and remote support. The support is provided by the Field Support Team (FST), a consortium of WASH agencies providing 8 staff (4 x coordinators, 3 x information managers, and 1 x assessment specialist) with the support and oversight of the GWC-Cluster Advocacy and Support Team. To access these services National Coordinators or Information Managers can send an email or inquiry to gwchelp@unicef.org (SWZ-GWC Help Desk). The new FST flyers for national platforms and donors are now available.
We also remind all that the GWC Coordination Toolkit is our live resource for guidance in all matters for coordination, information management and assessments. |

UNICEF WASH - Key Updates and New Resources
Guidance on market-based sanitation
 One of the key programming approaches adopted in UNICEF’s Strategy for WASH (2016-2030) is to build sustainable markets for sanitation goods and services. Market-based sanitation (MBS) is defined as a development approach to improve sanitation in a country by building the sanitation market of goods and services for which the customer makes a full or partial monetary contribution (with savings and/or cash equivalents) toward the purchase, construction, upgrade, and/or maintenance of their toilet from the private sector. This document was updated in 2021 to include three additional chapters on optimizing market interactions, expanding access to business finance, and market enablers. Read more here.
Evaluation Synthesis of United Nations System and Development Bank Work Towards SDG 6
 Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene and sound water resource management are at the very heart of health, sustainable development, environmental sustainability and poverty reduction. Although water is our most critical resource, billions still live without access to safe and sustainable water. Sustainable Development Goal 6 – “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”– aims to address issues relating to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as the quality and sustainability of water resources worldwide. However, we are falling behind in the achievement of the SDG 6 targets, and at current rates, these targets will not be met by 2030. Download here.

SWA - Mutual Accountability Mechanism Global Report 2021
 Every three years, SWA produces a global report to analyze how partners are working towards a culture of mutual accountability for ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for all, always and everywhere. This inaugural report, covering the first three years of the SWA Mutual Accountability Mechanism – the multi-stakeholder cycle of defining priorities, making commitments, monitoring progress, and renewing collaborative action – presents the mechanism as a pathway towards delivering on SWA’s strategic objectives, and ultimately, realizing the human rights to water and sanitation. On 6th December, Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) global partnership launched its Impact Booklet: Celebrating progress and change. It gathers stories of the impact of the partnership's work and offers a powerful snapshot of what partners working together achieved in recent years. Humanitarian WASH Master Degree - Second call for applications
|

|
|
 The German Jordanian University (GJU), in partnership with Action Against Hunger and Bioforce, has launched a call for applications for the second cohort of the WASH Master program, starting in February 2022.
The call for applications will be open from 28th November 2021 to 13th January 2022. The program is open to both Jordanian and international students, with a limited number of full scholarships available for selected applicants.
This WASH Master's degree is hands-on in nature with 60% of practical exercises including excursions and a five-day-long humanitarian response simulation exercise. A minimum of 25% of the courses is delivered as intensive courses by humanitarian experts who have extensive field experience. Additionally, the program includes an internship linking young professionals with relevant institutions to develop field experience, ensuring that students gain both theoretical and practical skills to equip them as the next generation of humanitarian practitioners for their region.

New Article - The Perimenopause: a hidden WASH issue
Discussions around the inclusion of women in water, sanitation and hygiene provision are long standing, but some issues for an increasing number of women “ of a certain age” – remain ‘hidden’. Our new paper in the Journal of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Development, The hidden WASH needs of perimenopausal women, reveals the experiences of women in Ghana who are at the time when their periods will permanently stop, at the menopause, taking a journey through a stage called the perimenopause. Triple Nexus in WASH - Africa 2021-2022 Regional Exchange Forum
The global Triple Nexus in WASH - Initiative1 invites to a series of Regional Exchange Forums in the regions Africa, Asia and MENA. The first forum will be convened by the German WASH Network, in collaboration with the Global WASH Cluster, Sanitation and Water for All and UNICEF for the Eastern Africa region, but held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) recruits committed and skilled experts for our humanitarian, resilience and peace support operations worldwide on a daily basis. MSB is opening the roster for Information Management Officers interested in working with us on Humanitarian Operations. Deployed as a Information Management Officer, the mission length usually is 6 months with a few weeks preparation prior to the mission. As a Information Management Officer you are expected to have knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to the management of information in complex emergencies, disaster preparedness, disaster response and early recovery. 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence 🧡
 We would like to remind and encourage WASH partners and coordination platforms to engage in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. We also wanted to inform you about various resources on GBV mitigation.
- The GBV Guidelines Knowledge Hub provides tools, resources, and multi-media designed for non-GBV specialized actors, about how to mitigate GBV risks.
- Consulting with women and girls throughout the humanitarian programme cycle is key to GBV risk mitigation in WASH programming, making programmes safer and more accessible. Please find here a tip sheet on consulting with women and girls, as part of the guidelines for integrating GBV interventions in Humanitarian Action.
- The Thematic Area Guide on WASH and Gender-Based Violence, which is a portable tool that can provide practical guidance on preventing and mitigate gender-based violence in humanitarian settings.

Centrality Of Protection In Humanitarian Action 2020 Review
 The 2020 Review by the Global Protection Cluster (GPC) of the Centrality of Protection in Humanitarian Action comes at a time when the world is still grappling with the full-blown effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dubbed a crisis within a crisis in humanitarian contexts, the impact of the pandemic deepened existing vulnerabilities and inequalities. Protection deteriorated in ongoing crises across the globe in a year in which we saw, yet again, the highest figure on record of persons internally displaced as a result of conflict, violence, disasters and the adverse effects of climate change.
