Rosenwald-Dunbar's Principal's Points

A MESSAGE FROM MR. PAYNE

Good Afternoon Eagle Family!
It has been an awesome few weeks here at Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary School. The Fall Festival was a huge success, students were able to attend field trips (Pumpkin Patch, Lexington Children’s Theater, Newton’s Attic, etc.) and nearly every parent/guardian was able to participate in a conference with their student(s) teacher. Our students and staff have been working incredibly hard and we are seeing great levels of success in the classroom. We are excited to round out 2021 with a fantastic last week of learning and fun, and we are looking forward to a special 2022!

RENOVATION UPDATE
As you have likely noticed, RDES Main is a very busy place and there has been incredible progress made with the renovations taking place at RDES! Over the next three weeks, teams will be working diligently to prepare the new wing for students. The week following the break, classrooms currently at the main campus will be transitioning into the newly renovated classrooms. Students located at the RDES Annex will remain at the Annex through the end of the school year. Students and staff are excited, and I am so excited to share pictures next month of our new intermediate classrooms. Once all the classes at Main have been moved to the renovated section, contractors will begin work on the primary wing! I appreciate the hard work and flexibility of so many (including you!) during this year, and I know it will all be worth it when our beautiful school is completed.

SNOW DAY/NTI INFORMATION

  1. Please check for school closing announcements on the Lexington T.V. stations. Closings are also posted on the District’s website and Facebook page.
  2. Please take a look at the Jessamine County Code of Conduct (p.22), to find the school closing protocols like a two hour delay or early school dismissal. This includes the names of roads that may not be traveled.

  3. School closings will be determined prior to 6:00 am.

  4. A Two-Hour Delay will be called if the forecast will allow for roads to clear and students and staff to safely travel to schools.

  5. Students must complete one day of NTI work for each day we are out of school. Your child’s teacher will be available by email to answer questions.

  6. If we are out more than one day at a time, students will complete one day of work for each day missed. Remember, this is the same as homework. If it is not completed, it carries the same consequence as not doing homework.

Please remember that in order for us to receive full credit (all 10 days) for NTI, all students must complete the work from EACH NTI day. If a child doesn’t complete the work, we will give them an opportunity to complete it at school during more preferred activities (ex. recess).

SAFETY REMINDERS
This is just a friendly reminder that hats and hoods are not to be worn in the building, unless otherwise noted as a classroom or school-wide incentive. With cold weather, obviously hats and hoods are welcome to be worn outside, including during recess, waiting for the bus, etc.

CHANGE OF TRANSPORTATION NOTIFICATION
We certainly understand that there will be times when you need to make a change in transportation for your student (but to car rider, car rider to bus, etc.), and at RDES keeping students safe is our number one priority. That said, the increasing number of phone calls coming in towards the end of the school day to make transportation changes is causing some challenges. Because these changes often require a chain of communication (especially between two schools), please call the offices as soon as you are aware of the needed changes. I am asking that all changes be made before 2:00pm to ensure your student accesses the appropriate method of transportation.

Also, please contact the RDES location that your child attends to make sure information is communicated as quickly as possible. The phone numbers for each location are below:

RDES Main Campus - 859.885.6670
RDES Annex Campus - 859.887.4865

FOOD DRIVE
The 2021 RDES December Food Drive was a huge success! Rosenwald students collected over 3,000 food items for the Jessamine County Food Pantry! Because of your generosity, hundreds of families will be provided much needed food throughout the winter! The winners of the class pizza parties were Mrs. Carter's class, Mrs. Worthington's class and Mrs. Cox's class!

ATTENDANCE
Please remember to send in a parent or doctor's note to your child's teacher when your child is absent from school. You have five days from the absence to turn in a note. If sending a note with a student, it is often helpful to send a Remind text to the teacher to let them know to look for the note. Beginning in January, a Remind Message will also be going home at the end of the day notifying you of a tardy or absence, and as a reminder to send it your notes (doctor’s or parent).

A student may miss up to six (6) days without a doctor or legal note. This includes parent notes and unexcused absences. Once the six (6) day limit has been reached, all future absences without a doctor or legal note will remain unexcused. If you have any questions about your child's attendance, please call the school office. We are always happy to help.
