Oakland, NJ, Antiques Shipper Gives Back After Head and Neck Cancer
|
|
|
One Oakland, NJ resident found himself with persistent, lingering pain in his mouth a couple of years ago. After initially assuming it was dental pain, he had a tooth pulled only to find that the pain continued. After some tests, he was diagnosed with head and neck cancer.

John Longo was fortunate enough to travel to the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center where he had the opportunity to work with HNC experts who specialize in robotic surgery.
John had transoral robotic surgery performed to remove the tumors present in his mouth and throat. This innovative surgery allowed the procedure to be far less invasive than normal, and John was left with only a small scar. John was able to make an amazing comeback after chemotherapy and radiation and has now started exploring ways to give back the same compassion and support he receives. John volunteers his time at the JBJ Soul Kitchen, a non-profit restaurant, and is dedicating his new chance at life to everyone who helped him get here.

A Support Team, Root Beer, and Trust: How Washington’s Ron Rivera Faced Cancer Without Missing a Game
|
|
One of the most notable cancer recoveries in recent history is the one of Ron Rivera. Ron, the head coach of the Washington Football Team, was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in his throat. Over the course of his treatment, he was able to make it through every game his team played that season with the help of his family, his care team, and his dedication.
To make it through Ron, took multiple naps each day to get enough rest.

While his chemotherapy and proton therapy treatments took a toll on his energy levels, he did not let that stop him. He was known by his doctors for being humble and following all of their guidance, even when it meant doing something inconvenient or uncomfortable. Ron’s story is one of hope for many HNC patients who face uncertainty as they enter the treatment process.
