Canvas Grade Submission

Please follow the instructions below to use the GT Grade Submission tool, which allows you to export student grades from Canvas and import them directly into Banner Faculty Grade Entry (FGE):

  1. To export your grades from Canvas, follow the instructions for "Step 1" below.
  2. To upload your grades to Banner, follow the instructions for “Step 2” below. (Please note: You must wait for the Banner grade publishing window to open before you can upload your grades.)

Step 1: Export your grades from Canvas

In order to use the GT Grade Submission tool, you will first need to enable and set a grading scheme in Canvas:

  1. Open your Course in Canvas
  2. Select "Settings" from the course navigation menu on the left.
  3. Under the Course Details tab, select the check box next to "Enable Course Grading Scheme"
  4. Beneath the check box, click "View Grading Scheme”
  5. In the View/Edit Grading Scheme window, click "Select Another Scheme"
  6. Select either "Midterm Grade" or "Final Grade"
  7. Click "Use This Grading Standard"
  8. Click Done

Once you have completed the above steps, click the "GradePub" button in your Course Navigation in order to export a Banner-ready spreadsheet of grades. You can use this same spreadsheet file to upload grades for multiple sections, using the directions in Step 2 below. When the spreadsheet is exported, students who are auditing the course will show a "V" instead of their letter grade. This prevents having to change an audit student's grade manually after the export.

If you encounter any issues with Step 1 above, please contact the Digital Learning Team.

Step 2: Upload your grades to Banner
  1. Go to the Banner Faculty Grade Entry (FGE) module at https://fge.sis.gatech.edu/FacultySelfService (Requires VPN when accessed from off-campus)
  2. Upload the spreadsheet you just exported from Canvas (see Step 1 above). If your spreadsheet contains multiple sections, you will need to upload the file once for each section. During the upload process, you will see error messages about any records in the grades spreadsheet which do not match the current section. This is the expected behavior. More information on this step is available at https://registrar.gatech.edu/info/importing-grades

After submission, there will not be a confirmation your grades have been submitted.

If you encounter any issues with Step 2 above, please contact the Registrar's Office at comments@registrar.gatech.edu. For additional information from the Registrar, see Grading and Grade Entry Information.

Helpful Tips as You Prepare for a New Semester

  • Combine Courses/Sections: Canvas allows instructors to move section enrollments from individual courses and combine them into one course. This feature is helpful for instructors who teach several sections of the same course and only want to manage course data in one location. Click here for more details.
  • Communicate: Early communication is vital. To communicate with students prior to the start of the term you will need to adjust both the start and end date for your course.
  • Pre-course Survey or other Pre-semester Start Assignments: In order to have students complete a pre-course survey or participate in an assignment prior to the regular term start - you will need to adjust both the start and end date for your course.
    • We suggest 12 days after the end of the term for the end date, afterward, the course will become read-only.
  • Draft State: If you would like to work on your course Modules before allowing students access to the materials, you can work in draft state, which makes Modules invisible to students.
  • Files: If you are allowing access to Files in the Course Navigation, the default setting in Canvas allows students access to the items that you upload into your Course Files, except for files uploaded directly into assignments, quizzes, and discussions. Please check to make sure the files you wish to share with or hide from students are marked as published or unpublished, respectively.
  • Course Design and Development: The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) offers assistance with designing and developing a new course, or re-designing an existing course by incorporating technologies to improve learning outcomes in various learning environments. Contact CTL by filling out this short contact form.
  • Publish: Remember to publish your course in advance of the course start date.

Instructions for Communicating Course Descriptions to Students

As soon as the Canvas sections are available for a given semester, faculty can provide brief details of course plans to assist students in course selection and planning for the upcoming semester. This course description will then be available to students in OSCAR when they view the individual course entry during the registration period.

OIT has created a helpful guide to answer the following questions:
  • What should my course description say?
  • How do I provide my course description?
  • How do my students access course descriptions?
  • How do I enter a course description in cases where several sections are combined in Canvas?

Updated Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Tool Available in Canvas for Spring 2022

In August 2020, C21U announced the release of the newest version of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) tool in Canvas. The KPI tool was originally designed to help instructors monitor students’ learning and gain insight into how to enhance learning in future hybrid or remote courses. Student users were asked to complete a brief anonymous online survey on a weekly basis in which they self-rate their learning experiences in different areas. The initial group of testers echoed that this tool will continue to remain useful in a fully residential mode.

Since the release, new features have been deployed to Georgia Tech’s instance of Canvas. C21U is excited to continue to provide this updated tool to faculty at Georgia Tech for the upcoming Spring 2022 semester. The tool now enables instructors to grab course-specific snapshots of how their students are performing in real time. More details of the new features include:
  • Teachers will see updated weekly averages for student responses in their teacher dashboard as they’re submitted. This will allow teachers to adjust their teaching strategies continuously as the data in the KPI dashboard is refreshed.

  • The original tool opened a new window and displayed the dashboard in Tableau, but now the revamped dashboard opens inside Canvas. This results in a more seamless experience for teachers.

  • The dashboard only displays the current Canvas course, rather than all courses in which the teacher is enrolled.

  • The dashboard uses color-coding and bar widths to display weekly averages at-a-glance – allowing teachers to quickly identify potential trouble spots.
