Celebrating International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is aimed at increasing awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability, as well as celebrating their achievements & contributions.

Instead of just celebrating IDPwD on Friday 3 December, the City of Stonnington proudly showcased a variety of inclusive, accessible and free activities for our whole community from 1 – 8 December.

Some of the activity highlights included a choice of world music inspired Zumba options (seated, online & face-to-face), Victorian Blind Cricket Association defeating Prahran Cricket Club in an exhibition match at Righetti Oval on the eve of the Blind Cricket Season, meeting new people & exploring new areas with the Summer Walk & Talk Buddies, learning how to make you NDIS program work for your needs via our webinar, as well as experiencing inclusive format of AFL and Wheelchair Rugby!

If you’d like to learn more about the available inclusive activity options with the City of Stonnington, contact us via email activestonnington@stonnington.vic.gov.au and we’ll point you in the right direction!

Health Club becomes icon for personal success

As she watches the trainer adjusting the equipment, she steals a glance at her friend who too is unsure of what the next thirty minutes has instore. At quarter past six in the morning she enjoys trying to decipher from the equipment Franklin has devised for the small group training session.

Every Thursday morning, she joins five others in this high paced training session. Over the past few years, she has come to know many of the other participants even meeting after for coffee at the club café. While she would never admit a subtle competitive streak, she is spurred on by the group's energy.

Franklin explains they are to complete a series of exercises using the deadballs (a sand-filled ball that holds tight to the floor under its own weight) and the rowing ergometers. Her eyes widen with surprise as once again, Franklin has taught her a new set of exercises.

‘3, 2, 1, rest.’ Franklin instructs concluding the session. She takes a moment to towel down and sip some water, feeling satisfied that before 7am, she has worked towards strengthening her legs and arms and is reassured her heart and lunges are working to their best capacity.

Community Sport

Sport4All Participating Club - Prahran Assumption Football Club

The Prahran Assumption Football Club (senior division of the Prahran Football Club – Est 1886) is our next spotlight club in the City of Stonnington who have been participating in the Sport4All program.

Prahran does not necessarily promote all the great work they have done over the years, however actions definitely speak louder than words at their Club. From their community sports programs that support primary school aged students, through to football skills development, to their junior and senior programs – Prahran have been instrumental in creating a club that is welcoming to everyone in our community.

At the completion of the 2017 season, Emily Hastie, an up and coming half-back for Prahran’s under 18’s spoke with her coach, Wayne Oswald, about a group of women who were deaf and hard of hearing and wanted more opportunity to play football. Hastie, who had learnt sign language at school became a player/interpreter for the team that would manage the senior women’s program for the following two seasons. When Oswald first introduced to the idea of starting a senior women’s team at Prahran, this team is not simply ticking a box on inclusion. Indigenous, underprivileged and players with a disability are all welcome. Prahran embraced the initiative and at the peak of the program, 12 women, deaf and hard of hearing were part of a senior team that used their abilities as an advantage.

Prahran Assumption Football Club adopted the way they communicated to the playing group utilising Emily’s interpreting skills, digital technology and whiteboards to communicate game strategy. Having the ability to communicate using just their hands, made it difficult for the opposition to know exactly what the players were thinking and planning.

This story truly represents what Sport4All’s core values represent; Any sport, anywhere, for anyone.

Sport4All webinars

Earlier this year, as part of the Sport4All program, we facilitated three amazing webinars designed to introduce sporting clubs and schools to the Sport4All program, provide an insight into the journey of four of medal-winning athletes from community clubs to the Tokyo Paralympics, and give our sports coaches an awareness of consideration when coaching para-athletes.

All three webinars are now available to view at anytime on the Active Stonnington YouTube channel:
