Wetlands are complex and diverse ecosystems
They offer shelter, food and breeding areas for countless animals from muskrats and flocks of sandhill cranes to frogs, fish and voles together with the multitude of plants, insects and microorganisms that live there.
Wetlands are a key component of healthy watersheds
They improve the quality and quantity of our water supplies, reduce flooding and soil erosion, store nutrients and carbon, and provide opportunities for recreation.
Wetland losses continue to escalate
Since the arrival of settlers in the 1800s Alberta's wetlands have undergone huge impacts, many disappearing altogether. Agriculture, resource development and urban expansion account for much of this—some estimate that 64% of wetlands in settled areas have been impacted or lost. The prospect of drought increases the risk to these critical areas.
