Dementia Career Development Awards:
Call for Applications

The NIHR Schools for Primary Care Research (SPCR), Public Health Research (SPHR) and Social Care Research (SSCR) (“three Schools”) have joined together in a unique collaboration between leading academic centres in England on a programme of research and related work on dementia funded through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The Three Schools’ Dementia Research Programme aims to develop the evidence base for dementia-related practice in England by commissioning and conducting high-quality research. The Programme builds on research within each School and will carry out research to address key gaps in the evidence base working collaboratively across primary care, public health and social care. As part of this commitment to developing research capacity in dementia-related practice, we are inviting applications for Individual Dementia Career Development Awards.

We are seeking high-quality applications for research career development awards from individuals who have a commitment to developing the evidence base to improve dementia-related practice in England. Applicants can request funding of up to £60,000.

The deadline for submission is 16.30 on Monday 31 January 2022.
Expressions of interest are requested by 16.30 on Friday 14 January 2022.

Multimorbidity PhD programme for Health Professionals

We are very excited to share the news that a new Multimorbidity PhD Programme for Health Professionals (funded by Wellcome) has been launched. The Clinical PhD Research Fellowships are fixed term 3 year appointments offering training, mentoring and support to health professionals undertaking a PhD on the topic of multimorbidity. The posts will be based in the University of Glasgow, University of Dundee, University of Edinburgh, and University of St Andrews. Their aim is to develop the next generation of leaders in multimorbidity research who are both excellent in their core disciplines and skilled in working widely across disciplines and sectors.

Full details and application can be found here  Closing Date: 10 January 2022
We are pleased to be inviting applicants to two new posts with the NIHR School for Primary Care Research, which is hosted within Keele University’s School of Medicine - a Community Engagement Manager and a Research Associate/ Research Fellow in Involvement and Engagement.

The NIHR School for Primary Care Research has, jointly with the NIHR Schools for Public Health and Social Care Research, received additional funding from the NIHR to deliver a programme on “Improving mental health and wellbeing in underserved populations through collaborative research”. Collectively, the Schools are well placed to carry out research that is cross-cutting and community-orientated to address challenges faced by those living with a range of mental health problems and their families, friends and carers, and able to develop relevant research on a population level as well as (importantly) specific groups of individuals from underserved communities within them. The programme includes the development of co-created research priorities, practitioner lead initiatives, research projects and a capacity building programme which includes the funding of early career and senior fellows.

The University is committed to operating flexible working practices wherever possible. The role can be taken on remotely, though occasional travel to the office at Keele University will be required. Additional travel throughout England to support events and strengthen engagement with communities will be required.

Could you Chair an NIHR Selection Committee?
The NIHR are looking for seven new Chairs for NIHR Academy Selection Committees to support the delivery of our competitions, chair committee meetings, and work with the NIHR Academy to develop schemes ensuring they remain relevant, and achieve their objectives.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has a long-standing commitment to improving access to health and social care  research for underrepresented groups.

You are invited to take part in a survey to explore your views on who you feel is under-served, what factors lead to being under-served and what changes have been seen to promote inclusivity in research participation. The survey is simple, anonymous and should take no more than five minutes to complete.

Your responses will be shared with the UK research community and used to promote the inclusion of under-served populations in research.

Some communities are underserved when it comes to participating in research. The NIHR Schools for Public Health Research, Primary Care Research and Social Care Research are pleased to present the webinar series “Diversity and involvement: whom to involve?”.

The first webinar of this series will take place Monday 13th December 10.00am -11am. We will focus on young people, the challenges that may be involved and best practice when it comes to engaging and working with them.

In this webinar, we will hear about the experiences and challenges encountered by SPHR researchers when working with young people. We are delighted that community partners, Chilypep and the Association for Young People’s Health will also share their insights from the voluntary sector on working both with young people and participating in research.

Individuals attending this event will have the opportunity to:

  • Listen to case studies from researchers who have worked with young people
  • Gain insights in best practice when working with young people
  • Find out about the challenges that may be present
  • Hear from community partners on their advice for engaging with them and young people
  • There will also be an opportunity to ask questions

Other webinars in the series will be on involvement of people with cognitive impairment and involvement of people who are often unheard. These sessions will take place in January and February 2022.

National Academic GP Training Conference

We are pleased to return to a face-to-face conference in Spring 2022, showcasing the breadth of academic primary care research from the application of basic science within general practice to patient engagement, preventative medicine, health policy, and global health. The conference will bring together primary care researchers (in a COVID-19 secure manner) from across the UK at all career stages, providing the perfect forum for dissemination and discussion of all aspects of primary care research. There will be four keynote speakers sharing their expertise with us and workshops focusing on academic careers, medical education, publishing, and wellbeing. There will be ample opportunity to share your own ideas and research with your academic peers via poster and oral presentations. Abstract submissions are open until 3rd January, and we look forward to your contributions.
