Working with State-of-the-Art NLP Models: A Friendly Introduction to Hugging Face

We often read about the many new advancements being made in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Each month, leading organizations release new models that seem like magic to us, such as models that can write it’s own code based on user prompts or are able to help answer our queries when we use Google Search. Large AI research groups like OpenAI and Google spend many years and pour millions of dollars into research to perfect these models. These sophisticated models can contain up to billions of parameters and can require many hours and expensive computing infrastructure to train. When all is said and done, these models feel out of reach and similar models impossible to attain. However, with just a little work, you too can learn to use and apply these state-of-the-art models to the problems you are trying to solve....read more.

R Fundamentals: Parts 1-4
Jan 11, 12, 13, 14 | 10am-1pm | Register for Zoom link
This workshop is a four-part introductory series that will teach you R from scratch with clear introductions, concise examples, and support documents. You will learn how to download and install the open-sourced R Studio software, understand data and basic manipulations, import and subset data, explore and visualize data, and understand the basics of automation in the form of loops and functions. After completion of this workshop you will have a foundational understanding to create, organize, and utilize workflows for your personal research.
 

Python Fundamentals: Parts 1-4
Jan 11, 12, 13, 14 | 10am-1pm | Register for Zoom link
This four-part, interactive workshop series is your complete introduction to programming Python for people with little or no previous programming experience. By the end of the series, you will be able to apply your knowledge of basic principles of programming and data manipulation to a real-world social science application.

- Discovery Spring 2022 Partner Aplications -
The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society’s Data Science Discovery Program is accepting project partner applications for Spring 2022. If you are interested in getting talented Berkeley data science students to work on your data science research project, please apply today! The Data Science Discovery Program is open to all UC Berkeley faculty, graduate students, and postdocs, along with non-profits, government agencies, and UC Berkeley-affiliated startups. 

Since 2015, the Data Science Discovery Program has connected thousands of undergraduate data scientists with hands-on, team-based opportunities in hundreds of cutting-edge data-centered research projects with various organizations at UC Berkeley and beyond. 

In addition to helping recruit student researchers, Discovery Program can provide free cloud computing credits and mentorship from graduate students with data science expertise. The Discovery Program also offers project management training for students and additional consultations for projects that are attempting to get off the ground.

The Division of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a pool of outstanding lecturers to teach Digital Humanities courses should an opening arise during the academic year, as well as, lecturers to teach in the Summer Minor in the Digital Humanities.

Salary range: Starting at $56,945
Percent time: Positions range from 33% to 100% each semester. Summer Sessions Lecturer appointments are part time and weighed at 50%.
Anticipated start: Positions usually start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August.
