Forward Forward

St. Olave’s is situated on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek Nations, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. This territory is also covered by the Toronto Purchase. Today, Toronto is home to many Indigenous people and we recognize their enduring presence and connection to this land. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather on this land, and we commit to and pray for the work of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

Rector’s message

As we approach the end of Advent, John the Baptist prepares our hearts to welcome the coming Christ. In fact, the Gospel lessons for both the Third and Fourth Sundays in Advent are about John and his work to proclaim the arrival of the Messiah.  We think of John primarily in his role as forerunner of Christ, but John had a vibrant ministry of his own before Jesus emerged into public view. He was famous for his bold preaching which brought him into direct conflict with authorities. But John recognized in Jesus one even greater than himself, and he turned public attention toward Christ, who he recognized to be the long-awaited Messiah. Join us this Sunday as we turn our attention to John who came to prepare the way of the Lord.

This week in Junior Church
This Sunday, Junior Churchers will be continuing their craft project to make Christmas cards for St. Olave’s seniors living on their own. If you would like more information about how to participate in this activity from home, please contact Brittany. Next week children will watch their video together and deliver toys to the Swansea Fire Hall.

Nativity Video – our 38th annual production!
Today at 4 p.m. don’t miss the world premiere of this year’s Nativity video, “Go, Tell it on the Mountain.” In this year’s story, a pair of outcast shepherds learn the story of Jesus is for everyone. Seventeen young actors participated, including six-month-old Ivy as Baby Jesus (that’s not a crying sound effect!) Click on the above link at 4 p.m. to watch our 10-minute presentation, or view it later at your convenience. Share with your friends and family, too!

Morning Prayer During Christmastide

This year for the 12 Days of Christmas (December 26 to January 5) we invite you to join St. Olave’s in 12 Days of Prayer. For December 25 and 26 and January 2, we will be praying in church. Monday, December 27 to Saturday, January 1, and Monday, January 3 at 8:30 a.m. we will be saying Morning Prayer on Zoom while Rev’d Rob is on vacation. Your Daily Officers are Carol Drummond and Janice Douglas, with support from Bill Wilson, Jelana Duncan and Annis Tebbutt. All are welcome to join us on Zoom. These services will not be live streamed on Facebook. Morning Prayer for the last two days of Christmas (January 4 and 5) will return to Facebook Live with Rev’d Rob leading (Evening Prayer returns as well).

To receive the Zoom link for the Morning Prayer services, please email the office at stolaves@stolaves.ca.

Altar Poinsettias in honour or memory of loved ones
This Christmas we will again be beautifying our worship space with poinsettias. The cost is $15 per plant. You can mail or drop off a cheque, or drop off cash to the office, clearly marked Poinsettias with your name and the name of your tribute (for example, who the plant is in memory of). You can also make your donation online at stolaves.ca/giveonline and then choose “Poinsettias” from the dropdown menu and add the name of your tribute in the note field. The names will be printed in the bulletins for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (Dec. 19), Christmas Eve Holy Communion and Christmas Day. The deadline to order is Wednesday, December 15.

Please note, the poinsettias will be in place from Decemember 19 evening through to the Octave of Christmas January 2, so there will be no opportunity for memorial altar flowers in this time period .
Junior Church is leading a parish toy drive again this year. You are invited to contribute an unused, unwrapped toy(s) to support this effort by Sunday, December 19, 10 a.m. Toys can be brought to church on Sundays and left in the Narthex. We will store them safely downstairs. If you need to drop off a toy during the week, please contact the office for a convenient time.
Food Drive
According to Feed Ontario, in 2019, 2,660 people living in Parkdale-High Park used a food bank a total of 28,037 times. 17% of those visits were made by children.
Current figures are not available but the pandemic has not likely decreased the need. Throughout December, will be placing the food cart in the Narthex and invite you to bring non-perishable food items that will then be delivered to local food banks.
Next Book Club book announced (for your wish list!)

Fresh from its Giller Prize win, What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad is the next choice for our book club read. The date will be some time in January or February. The New York Times describes the novel as “a beautifully written, unrelentingly dramatic, and profoundly moving novel that looks at the global refugee crisis through the eyes of a child.” For more details about the novel or the author click on the publisher website here. To be added to the book club list please email Janice Douglas.
