Your travels and stories from around the Middle Kingdom

"Tibetan itself is not actually a single language— it has three major branches, which locals call “dialects”: 卫藏Weizang dialect (Lhasa dialect), 康Kangba dialect (Dege dialect, Qamdo dialect), and 安多Amdo dialect (Qinghai Tibetan region).

1️⃣卫藏Lhasa Tibetan is the most widely spoken Tibetic languages. It is the official language of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.
2️⃣康Khams Tibetan is spoken by the majority of the people in the eastern part of Tibet Autonomous Region. Khams Tibetan is not mutually intelligible with other Tibetic languages.
3️⃣安多The Amdolese language is spoken mainly in Qinghai and some parts of Sichuan and Gansu.

These three languages share a common written script but their spoken pronunciations, vocabularies and grammars are different. These differences may have emerged due to geographical isolation. "
