Conservation Successes

Pickles Waterfall Wetland on Denman Island purchased for conservation. Denman Conservancy Association (DCA) is delighted to announce that it has purchased two adjacent lots of maturing Coastal Douglas-fir forest ecosystems and valuable wetlands on Denman Island. The properties, traditionally occupied by various Coast Salish peoples, and unceded, were most recently held by Raven Forest Products Ltd. of Campbell River BC. Together they total 32.02 hectares (~80 acres). Read the full media release here.

Cable Bay property on Galiano Island protected. The Nature Trust of BC, with help from the Galiano Conservancy Association and many wonderful donors, is successfully closing the purchase of the 65-acre Cable Bay property on Galiano Island! The land will now be protected from development, leaving this haven of coastal forest and sandstone shoreline for the diversity of wildlife that call it home. Read more about this property here.

New wildlife sanctuary near Bella Coola possible through generous gift. A riverfront property in the Bella Coola Valley that local residents Harvey and Carol Thommasen purchased in 2018 with the aim of making it a bird sanctuary is now the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) newest conservation area in British Columbia. The 122-hectare Snowshoe Creek Conservation Area, located in the traditional, unceded territory of the Nuxalk Nation, protects thriving rainforest, floodplain and riverside habitat that supports an abundance of wildlife and plant diversity. The vision to establish an interconnected system of wildlands stretching from Yellowstone in Wyoming to the Arctic Circle in the Yukon (Y2Y) is paying off. The Nature Trust of BC has established two scholarships and one grant in honour of distinguished scientists and past members of our Board of Directors: the Bert Hoffmeister Scholarship at the University of British Columbia, the Dr. Ian and Joyce McTaggart-Cowan Scholarship at the University of Victoria and the Brink/McLean Grassland Conservation Fund. The Rain Garden Fund has been created thanks to their donors. The next application deadline is for the Brink/McLean Fund: February 11.
