As many people have experienced, this pandemic had a profound impact on which sports Irish people take part in. Individual sports and activities such as walking, running and cycling have experienced unprecedented growth! One recent report from Sport Ireland has seen participation in outdoor recreation and sport double during the pandemic. This increase in using our outdoor spaces has led to a dramatic increase in litter and water pollution, as well as disturbance to vegetation, wildlife, livestock and other people.
While these are all areas that Leave No Trace Ireland works hard to mitigate and inspire change in, the news is not all bad. As more people experience our outdoors, more people are learning about the impacts they and others leave on our environment. We have seen growth across the board: our memberships are up, our engagement has increased, and even our team has expanded. This growth is the result of all the work that has been put into responsible outdoor recreation education. The more we all learn about our environmental impacts the better we can all take care of our home! Awards like this promotes our message even further!
On behalf of the Board and staff of Leave No Trace Ireland I extend a sincere thank you, to you, our members for your unwavering resolve and support during the most turbulent of times. Your passion and enthusiasm are what drives our success. Without your interest, belief and commitment, the organisation would simply be unable to deliver its programme and protect the environment.
This award encourages us to work harder to achieve our vision of inspiring ethical outdoor recreation. It is amazing to see what a group of dedicated people can achieve.
