We Supported Children, Seniors, Sculpture, Music, Environment, & Social Justice in 2021
Thoughtfully submitted by GRC Chair, Rich Bullock
This year’s grants supported a variety of projects and nonprofits.
The Grant Review Committee (GRC) recommended to the Foundation’s board which proposals to fund and how much to give in 2021:
Supplies for the Children’s Center and the Lawson Place Community Center;
Facility upgrades for the Senior Center and Outdoor Education Center;
Money to complete the Wheeling Gaunt sculpture;
A grant to the 365 Project to conduct a cost of living study;
An African drumming class;
A youth dance show by DCDC (with YS / MT connections);
A special reporting project on food insecurity by WYSO.
And that’s only a sample of what the Foundation funded.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Foundation is able to assist in making things possible that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to do.
Special thanks to the Morgan Family Foundation, which provided significant funding during the past three years that greatly increased what we could give!
The GRC’s funding is replenished each year; we’ve given grants ranging from less than $100 to several thousand dollars. Especially with larger proposals, the GRC is more likely to provide funding if the organization can show that it’s working on obtaining funds from other sources and collaborating with other local organizations as well.
It’s also worth noting that individuals or groups who have ideas for grant proposals but who aren’t official nonprofit organizations can still submit proposals, but they need to be sponsored by a nonprofit in order to get funding.
The bottom line: we want to help by providing funding to (as YSCF’s charter states) “assist, encourage, and promote the well-being of the citizens of the Village of Yellow Springs and Miami Township.”
These examples of grants demonstrate the many different ways our donors, nonprofits, and volunteers make a difference!
