*NOTE* I am re-sending this Update because we had technical difficulties with our Ronin email account over the weekend. Please check to see if you are receiving emails via your Ronin Institute email address. If you are not and you are using a third part mail client (e.g., MacMail, Thunderbird, Zimbra, etc) here is the fix: Check your IMAP/POP and SMTP settings. Make sure your incoming and outcoming mail server is mail.ronininstitute.org, and NOT secure221.inmotionhosting.com, If this isn't your issue and you are still having trouble with your email account, please reach out to infrastructure@ronininstitute.org

Greetings Scholars,

Our Lightning Talks are this week. There will be presentations on "Weather as a career metaphor" and "Opto-electric propulsion for microcraft". Hope you all can attend!

Our Membership Working Group meeting is this week. All are welcome to join this meeting and discuss how we do membership at the Ronin Institute.

We're continuing the conversation about the Ronin College this week. At this meeting, we're hoping to start a concept document to outline our ideas behind it, and also figure out some concrete steps forward towards organizing it.

If you're not on the Ronin Slack workspace, you might be missing some great stuff! For this month, I've pulled together a Slack Round Up of some current events, funding opportunities, and calls for collaboration that Scholars have posted there. There are also a few Interest Groups interested in scheduling regular meetings.

Have a great week!

- Arika

All events are on our Ronin calendar (add the Google Calendar). If you want to add something to this Weekly Update that you think Ronin Scholars would be interested in, please reach out via weekly.update@ronininstitute.org

Ronin Lightning Talks

Date: Dec 9. 2021
Time:  1:30 PM - 2:10 PM US ET / 18:30-19:10 UTC (in your local time)(add to your calendar)
Meeting Link: Zoom
Host: Arika Virapongse
Presenters:

Will Donald presenting on Conceptualisation of Weather as a Career Metaphor
Summary: In this session I will present the conceptualisation of Weather as a Career Metaphor (WCM). The theoretical framework underpinning the conceptualisation of WCM draws together aspects of sustainable career theory, chaos theory of careers encompassing chance events and career shocks, and conservation of resources theory. The WCM is constructed of ten elements of weather that apply to different contexts and across the lifespan. These include sun, rain, drought, thunder and lightning, ice, fog, tailwind, headwind, tornado, and rainbow. The WCM offers a complementary tool as part of a wider toolkit for career counsellors to help their clients to understand potential challenges within contemporary labour markets. This facilitates individuals to take ownership of their careers, acquire personal resources, and take proactive steps to prepare themselves for when career shocks inevitably occur. Benefits subsequently transcend to organisations and national economies.

John LaRocco presenting on Nightgaunt Drive: Opto-electric Propulsion for Relativistic Microcraft
Summary
: Missions between planets or stars, each has its own problems. Fuel and reaction mass increases the total size of the craft, making acceleration more difficult. Broadcasted power requires long-term, power intensive space-based infrastructure, such as a high-output laser or mass driver. Even self-contained power systems, like radiothermal isotope generators (RTG), are bound by the half-life of the material used. However, recent research has found electrical power can be extracted from molecular motion. When combined with proven light sail technology, this offers the potential for a low-cost, scalable, and effectively self-powered method of continuous electric propulsion.
